JMM bulking up: Is it really advantageous?

    PED issues aside please.

I'm curious if to know what you guys think is the reason behind JMM deciding to bulk up like that.
My understanding is punching power is a gift, it has more to do with your bone mass, muscle twitching speed (a.k.a. reflex) and of course technique (which JMM is probably maxed out already with).

Is he really thinking that he can KO the granite chinned Pac by bulking up?
Because no amount of muscle mass SHOULD be able to increase your punching power that much.

On the other hand, could it be that he is increasing the mass of his upper back, neck and shoulder muscles mainly to withstand the punching power of Pac?
I find this also weird since JMM rolls with Pac's punches almost to perfection, and bulking up some more will take away some of the fluidity that he has.

I don't think he would like to outmuscle Pac since he is at his best while fighting at the center of the ring and while fighting off the counter.
Although Pac doesn't have a great inside game, I find it absurd that this is his plan.

    Then there's the stamina issue.
I think the best shot that Pac has is to attack relentlessly.
We saw in Pac-JMM 3 that aside from letting JMM initiate, Pac had much success on rounds that they won't went at it (middle rounds) -- JMM clearly looked tired at the end of each round.
Adding muscle mass will further decrease one's stamina since muscles utilize more energy.
Couple that with age and I don't really see the point.

    Thoughts?

Higher weight. More muscle. Better to gain muscle than fat.

good and bad, he gets stronger on the inside but probably loses something in speed.

    That's what I was thinking.
It's all about the inside game. I don't see see the mass helping JMM anywhere else.

But then if this is the case, if it's true that team Pac is focusing on speed, that would mean he is at a disadvantage here.
I don't see Pac returning to his performance against ODLH or Cotto, but he was very clearly faster than JMM the last time and JMM was able to counter him perfectly with his frame, speed and weight at the time.
How does the additional weight should help?

I dont know if he's trying to bulk up so much as he's trying to improve strength and punching power. He needs that at this weight to earn Pac's respect. Ultimately though I don't think either guy should be trying to bulk up too much; they're both relatively small and adding muscle just slows you down. I think it's advantageous for either guy to come in a bit light to conserve speed , especially Pac as that's his best asset.

I think it helps Marquez when Pacquiao rushes in. Especially in the first fight, Marquez at times was literally bowled over. The second fight not as much, but after the knockdown Pacquiao rushed in again, and Marquez was badly taken off his footing.

None of that happened in the 3rd fight. Every time Pacquiao rushed in, Marquez either used his footwork, or when he didn't have enough space, was able to stand his ground and push Pacquiao back. The extra weight has made Marquez harder to move for Pacquiao, in a sense.

a little less speed shouldn't make that much of a difference as jmm has pac figured out.

    dangerous fight for pac.

    Makes sense.

He should be concentrating on legs. His legs got tired in the last fight. Thats why he lost the last 4 rounds.

If you're insinuating Marquez has bulked up for this 4th fight, he's not going to be bigger than he was for their last fight.

Last fight Marqeuz was 142 officially and 150 on fight night.

This fight is contracted at Welterweight, Marquez cant afford to have Pacquiao outweigh him by more than 4 or 5 lbs. If Pacquiao has a significant weight advantage along with the speed he allready has over Marquez, it will be very diffult for Marquez to be able to physically hold off Pacquiao's rushes and add to that his punch resistance to Pacquiao's shots if he were to come in small, would be diminished.

Marquez it turned out outweighed Pacquiao by a couple of pounds and its those pounds that helped Marquez resist Pacquiao's strenghth and power imo.
