The Fighter of the Year award is not based on official scoring, it's more subjective. Of course for The Ring and other magazines, experts are voting for the rightful winner. Why this is important? Because JMM has just won the lineal LW championship by TKO, and he's coming from a fight for The Ring SFW championship vs. P4P-king Manny Pacquiao and most experts had him winning. The same experts who'll vote for the 2008 awards. Nothing to take away from the great great PacMan - he can still get a HUGE win to get the award easily - but why not count Marquez' performance in for the FOTY year award?

JMM vs. PacMan II: Newspapers', experts', boxers' scorecard (from BoxRec):
    - Associated Press:114-113 Marquez
    - Joe Santoliquito:115-112 Marquez
    - Dan Rafael, ESPN.com: 114-113 Marquez
    - Darius Ortiz, ESPN.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Eric Raskin, ESPN.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Brian Kenny, Friday Night Fights:115-112 Marquez
    - Scott Mallon, Ring Magazine / Boxing News / The Fist / Boxing Digest:114-113 Marquez
    - Yahoo Sports:115-112 Marquez
    - Fight News.com:115-112 Marquez
    - Steve Carp, Las Vegas Review Journal: 114-113 Marquez
    - Norm Fraunheim, Arizona Republic:114-113 Marquez
    - Rich Marrotta, Top Rank TV:114-113 Marquez
    - Kieran Mulvaney, Reuters:114-113 Marquez
    - DogHouseBoxing:114-113 Marquez
    - Brett Conway, MaxBoxing.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Rick Reeno, ***********.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Gary Randall, MaxBoxing.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Bart Barry, 15Rounds.com:115-113 Marquez
    - Bruce McTavish, International Judge:115-112 Marquez
    - Francis Ochoa, Philippine Daily Inquirer:114-113 Marquez
    - Scott Christ, BadLeftHook.com:114-113 Marquez
    - William Detloff, The Ring Magazine:115-113 Marquez
    - Ron Borges, TheSweetScience.com:114-113 Marquez
    - Bert Sugar:Marquez
    - Max Kellerman & Bob Papa:Marquez in both fights
    - Nonito Donaire:114-113 Marquez
    - Filipino Sports Analysts Ronnie Nathanielsz, Recah Trinidad and Ed Picson all picked Marquez.

Let's see the FOTY candidates so far:
    - Antonio Margarito, still possibly the favourite to win with stunning wins over Cintron and Cotto - my vote is on him
    - Nate Campbell: a great win over Diaz but unfortunately no following due to Joan Guzman
    - Joe Calzaghe: close win over Hopkins, a possible win over Jones
    - Cristian Mijares: a win over Navarro, unification vs. Munoz, possible win over Darchinyan
    - Kelly Pavlik: 2nd win over Taylor, win over Lockett, possible win over Hopkins
    - Manny Pacquiao: win over Marquez for The Ring SFW title, win over David Diaz at LW, possible win over DLH at WW (wll, not likely, but who knows?)

So, is JMM - the winner of two very important fights according to the same experts who's job it to vote for the Fighter of the Year - a strong candidate in your opinion, dear ESB fans?

he does not stand a chance. The fact remains pacquiao got the decision against Marquez and is regarded 'best fighter in the sport' largely because of that fact.Depending on results it could be an exciting four horse race at the end of the year among calzaghe, pacquiao, pavlik and margarito(the current favorite). One good win does not make you a candidate.

My pic is Mijares I really hope he beats Darch. what sucks is that he isnt known much and doesnt get the recognition. Im pretty sure the stupid media will choose PAC as fighter of the year win or loose this coming Dec, which is bull because most believe he lost to Marquez, Diaz is the weakest at lightweight, and DLH fight is a joke.

Hell no. JMM lost to Pac and beat a washed up Casa. Remember, Casa got a gift against Santa Cruz and was on his way to losing against Katsidis until Katsidis ran into that left hook. Right now, Mijares is the front runner followed by Margo. Pac will overtake all of them if he beats Hoya.

Cintron is trash. He was a paper champ that has beat no one of note. Considering Mijares has a date set against Darchinyan in Nov, he's the frontrunner.

Manny can lock it up if he pulls off the upset.

Two fights, but he won't get it due to his favourite status in both.

    Margarito is my pick.
