He is a wonderful exponent of technical boxing and can dig in and be exciting when necessary.I will sadly miss him when he hangs up the gloves.I'd love to see him and Morales bow out together with a bout but it won't affect their legacies whoever wins.Morales' comeback is great to watch but everyone knows he's a shadow of the ATG he once was.The fact he's still competing at this level is amazing when you consider how shot he looked in 2005.Marquez,Barrera and Morales are three of the greatest fighters I have seen and boxing will be a poorer sport without them.I wish we could savour them all without splitting them with arguments.

 

Morales himself just publicly claimed that Marquez is the 2nd Mexican to beat Pacquiao for sure after their 3rd bout.

 

JMM surpassed Sanchez awhile ago.

Longevity - Sanchez died young, which wasn't his fault. However, he must be rated based on what he did accomplish, not speculation. Sanchez was only a great featherweight for a few years. His best wins came against Gomez, a fighter who never had success at featherweight, and Nelson, a young, inexperienced fighter, who took that bout on short notice.

JMM was a top featherweight for a longer period of time and he's still going strong at 38 years of age in his fourth weight class). That type of stuff is unprecedented for a career featherweight.

Multi-weight success - Again, Sanchez was only great at featherweight for a few years. JMM has been great from 126-144. JMM has proven himself to be world class in 3 original eight divisions (featherweight, lightweight, welterweight). No contest.

Opposition - Sanchez's best opponents were Lopez, Gomez, Nelson.
JMM's best opponents were Pacquiao (X3), Salido, Barrera, Diaz, Mayweather. Again, no contest.

I think one can make a case for Marquez as the #2 Mexican fighter of all-time.

We don't even know if Sanchez would've been able to fend off a more experienced Nelson, much less an Arguello or young Chavez. His last couple of performances coupled with history indicate to me that he would've starting piling up losses within a few years. He wasn't untouchable like some of his fans like to believe. He had a lot of holes in his game as evidenced in many of his championship featherweight bouts (Cowdell, Ford, Laporte).

But still had great entertaining fights, vs Pac 2 times, vs Diaz 2 times, vs Barrera, vs Katsidis, vs Salido, and many others.

JMM is #1 among all the Mexicans I know, and now even more after the last Pacquio fight, he is a certified legend among hardcore and casual Mexican Boxing fans, at this point most casual fans which are the majority of the fans, have JMM a level higher than Barrera and Morales, simply because Marquez beat Pac 3 times.

Seriously :blood, Nearly all every Mexican fan who knows the 3, have Morales and Barrera on bum status compared to Marquez, and they always talk about how exiting all of Marquez fights are, and that he never disappoints.

All my Mexican family Members and friends know Marquez is one of the greatest, and have kind of forgotten of how great Morales and Barrera used to be, even the old generations.

 

Same here. Most people I know have Marquez above Morales slightly, but above Barrera by a good bit.
