Marquez is still one of the best technicians of our era. Certainly one of the best counter punchers and most resiliant fighters of our era. The man spent nearly his whole career in the shadows of Erik Morales and Barrera, and those are some huge mafuggin shadows i would think. With that said, he was on this solid course of action. He had just had ANOTHER CLOSE CLOSE fight with Pacquiao, KO'd Joel Casamayor (previously never KO'd) KO'd Juan Diaz and then here comes money mayweather. The size difference in that fight was so riciculous imo. You could see it clearly. It was like watching Valuev vs. (whoever)

IDK imo he shoudla never fought mayweather. I dont even think it affected JMM that much. The guy has balls and moved up 2 weight divisions to fight arguably the best P4P fighter in the world and didnt get knocked out. To me, Marquez is still top 5 pound 4 pound in the world, i just think the Mayweather fight was a stupid waste of time fight.

It was a risk he was willing to take because he had to. Pacquiao recently moved up and beat DLH in a fight no one gave Pacquiao a chance, not even Marquez. At the time Marquez was trying to force a third fight with Pacquiao so he was forced to move up whether against Mayweather or whoever, his goal was to try to shock and impress the way Pacquiao did. Only that way he would have secured a third fight and made it bigger than ever if he came out victorious against Mayweather. Imagine how big a third fight with Pacquiao was going to be if he won, he was already coming off two shocking impressing KO victories over Casamayor and Diaz, a win over Mayweather would have made it huge. He's old and looking for the big money fights, unlucky for him fighting a returning Mayweather was his best shot to secure more big money fights. No one sane can deny that he's fearless for making that fight and taking a risk like that even when he got screwed with the catchweight he took the money and still fought knowing he was at a disadvantage whether Mayweather made the catchweight or not.

the only negative i can think of is the toll that putting on and taking off the extra weight could take

He did what he had to do...i still think he is a hell of a fighter and can be a force at 140 actually.....honestly if he stays patient and dominates 140...i think Pac will come back around probally after he loses to Floyd....he will not want to go out on an L and i think 140 is Pac's best weight....i think he just has to be patient but then again they arent gettin any younger but i think this is his best chance to get to Pac....he has to dominate a 140 division.....which i think he is capable of doing.

JMM was in a bit of a damned if he does, damned if he doesn't position pre-Mayweather. He wanted to fight Pacquiao again, he wanted to continue to stake a claim to being pound for pound #1, and he wanted big money fights because he's getting onto his last legs.

No one at 135 was going to do any of those for him. No one that he hadn't already beaten had the name recognition for a big money fight. No one was going to help him keep pace with Pacquiao, and no one was going to keep him in the race for p4p #1.

With Mayweather he didn't have much of a chance to win, but a good showing would keep him in p4p contention, get him some money, and possibly help amp up a third Pac bout. Unfortunately, he got blown out, and with Marquez getting older I don't know how many more top notch bouts he has left in him. Maybe just 1, and dealing with the gaining and losing weight isn't going to help.

The bout didn't do him any favors, but he probably also felt like he had to take a a chance and do something instead of just being left behind.

Oh Marquez. Bad luck follows you everywhere. I hope you get the closing fights you deserve. After Diaz, he should pick his fights really carefully and make sure everythings right for him.

as a 36 year old who hasn't had tons of media exposure, i can't blame him for taking a fight that pays

Why? Marquez got paid handsomely. More money then he was ever going to see anywhere else.

REALLY REALLY dumb move by Marquez. But he made a hell of a lot of money from it. The problem is that people will only see Mayweather > Marquez. They won't understand that the guy was coming up TWO WEIGHT divisions and Mayweather went over the contracted weight as WELL.

Marquez is one of the best counterpunchers and technicians in the business. Against Mayweather he had to turn into an aggressive fighter, and Mayweather with his advantages in size, speed, power, reach and weight took him apart.

    BAD BAD fight for Marquez

The way Marquez saw it was that he would make real retirement money - money no other opponent outside of Pac would have gotten him. He had a better chance than normal because Mayweather was older, had been out the ring and wasn't a huge puncher. He probably felt he could make it a closer fight than he did.

He didn't, but the plus side is that it has no effect on his legacy because he never had a realistic chance against mayweather, so he just looks foolishly brave.

The guy's a real warrior, but his retirement is coming.

JMM got a career high payday he was right for taking the fight. I think he can still be a force at 135 or 140 right now.
