    The fight should have happened at all because:

    1. it was a glaring mismatch even before Marquez called Floyd;
    2. Floyd violated the contracted weight agreement.

    Mayweather carried Marquez the whole fight. He could have ended it easily in the early rounds, but he chose to get rid of his ring-rust, plus he doesn't have any bad blood with Marquez and didn't feel it necessary to truly hurt him.

    Pacquiao is a great fighter, but Mayweather would beat him convincingly.

    You can't counterpunch what doesn't come at you.

    Stylistically Pacquiao's speedy aggression was neutralized by Marquez's timing and warrior will.

    Mayweather's counterpunching style and universally acknowledged reluctance to come foward (it's not his style) forced Marquez to suddenly come foward and open up a way he never had before, at a weight he had never fought at, at an age past his prime, with Mayweather coming in over weight on top of the reach advantage and such.

    I'm not saying Marquez would have necessarily won at a comfortable weight in his prime, but it would have been more competitive. And against Pacquiao, he clearly won the first one in my opinion.

    So in reference to the thread, of course Marquez's counterpunching was ineffective against Mayweather- it wasn't and couldn't be used. You can't counter something that runs.

    I always felt it was a great close fight but IMO it was clear that JMM won. There wasnt many rounds that could've went either way. It was great back and forth action but most rounds it was clear who won them.

    Marquez has been coming forward and opening up in his last 4-5 fights. Floyd did not run from Marquez you ****ing dimwit. Floyd was right there in front of him. Moving your head out of the way of a punch is not running.. Where do you get these recycled whores.

    Exactly . Pac was coming at JMM allowing JMM to counter. JMM came forward agasint Mayweather knowing very well that wasnt his fightstyle and Mayweather kinda just ran from JMM.

    Pac will more than likely come forward against Mayweather allowing him to counter too.

    fraud scared of Pac, that's why he used the 14 day blood test as his out. if that diund't work he would have used something else.

    different styles. If we're seriously going to say something like "Marquez was effective against Pac but was schooled by Floyd hence Floyd will school Pac" then that means that we can also say that "Ricky was blown out by Pac in 2 but it took Floyd 10 rounds to beat him so Pac will beat Floyd".

    Either both are right or both are wrong since they're both using the same kind of reasoning. In the end, Marquez was 2 divisions above his last fighting weight and fighting someone with a different style as Pac, it can't be used as a definitive gauge for how a Floyd-Pac fight would turn out.
