I keep hearing things that suggest that JMM isn't that popular in Mexico, or at least not as popular as he should be given his accomplishments. I remember hearing how he was overshadowed by Barrera and Morales, how when he fought Pac a lot of Mexican people were rooting for Pac, and now that guy, according to Lampley, that fought Baldomir on the Mora Mosley undercard is apparently a huuuge star in Mexico and I never heard such things about JMM. Is it true that he's not that big a star, and if so why is that? He's agressive and exciting and has a ton of heart.
I've always heard that he has been living in both Barrera and Morales' shadow his whole career, and that he has never had the following the before mentioned had. The Mexican people rooting for Pacquiao...that's the first I've heard of that...
The only thing that's true about that is him being overshadowed by MAB and EM. He became popular after his fight with Pacquiao.
to my understanding he is the most popular active mexican boxer today...he def has a name in Southern Cali too
Hes not as big as you would expect it. Marquez was poorly displayed as a pro here in the states. As a result he wasnt really well known to his public here and he really didnt even have a following back home were he only fought about 10 times profesionally as opposed to other Mex greats who made their career back at home. So he didnt have a following in Mexico and he didnt have it here in the states until he started getting the big fights.
I think it mostly boils down that not many of his earlier fights were on TV in Mexico, just in the US, so he didn't really get the big following.
He lived in the shadows of MAB and EM. Also he used to be a pure counter puncher back in the day and changed his style to make himself more marketable. Thats really when he started getting more attention from Mexicans.
The reason he's not popular is because he had an incredibly boring counter-punching style earlier in his career compared to fighters like Barrera and Morales. Right now Margarito is probably Mexico's most popular boxer judging from the crowds he can pull in. Saul Alvarez seems like a charismatic individual and could have a very bright future if his chin can hold up vs. bigger punchers.
He's gotten more popular over the last few years, most of the crowd were for him when he fought Mayweather, but generally he hasn't been a big attraction. He's become more entertaining and aggressive recently but for most of his career he was a boxer not the blood and guts type the Mexicans seem to love. It's hard for me to tell as I don't speak Spanish but he doesn't seem to project much personality either, others like Morales or JCC before him have a certain something about them that draws people to them which Marquez lacks.
