Joan Guzman clinches the Hall of Fame on Saturday

Guzman is 33. Time is running out for him to show how special he supposedly is. His win over Soto was good, but it was two years ago. His other good win was Barrios, but that one was a SD.

I'm sure this HOF talk is probably half kidding; he's got a ways to go prove he is in the elite level of fighters today.

 

He beat Barrios clearly.And those 2 weren't his only good wins.

He als obeat Jandeang when he was undefeated,Sanchez,Beltran when he was undefeated and Jauregui while going threw 4 weight classes.

But I agree time is running out on him.

 

Isnt it funny how two of the best defensive fighters today (Calderon n Guzman) are both old and shut out from the best fights out there for them?

 

33 !!! most boxers retire at 36 years old, he has three years, 2 or 3 fights a year, that'd be within his next 10 fights, he should get JMM, Valero, or Rocky Martinez !!

 

Well, I didn't see the Barrios fight, so I'll take your word for that.

I guess I dont rate Jandeang as highly as you do, and Sanchez already had nine losses when he fought Guzman. Javier J. had 12 losses when they met.

I think we're in a similar point of view with Guzman. We just disagree on how good his record is, but we agree that he has potential for greater things.

 

Now since joining Golden Boy he should get a top notch fight real soon. He Joined the devil but selling your soul to him would get you a big fight :yep

 

Believe me I'm a big Barrios fan and I scored it by 3 for Guzman.Watch it,it's quite entertaining.

While all the others don't look great they are nontheless good wins,he as pretty inexperienced with Sanchez when they fought,he was coming up in weight with Jandaeng and didn't even make weight with Jauregui(which suggests he didn't train hard) and won every round pretty much with one hand.
But yes he hasn't fullfiled even half of what his tremedous potential could obtain.

I'm hoping that if Guzman wins this one he stays a lot more active. There are a lot of good matchups out there for him if he stays ready.

I think he's past it.In his last fight he showed more recklessness on his usual great defense in favour of more offense.He was hurt on the ropes by ordinary Ameth Diaz.But that could be since the opponent wasn't on hiscalibre abd he took him lightly.
Woukldn't surprise me at all if Funeka beats him altough I think Guzman will win.

 

Based on styles I would say Guzman could defeat both JMM and pac no promblem but loses to Roman martinez or has a close fight with him

 

Could be. Funeka is a tough customer.

If Guzman wins, at least he has the chance to pick up some paydays to try to recoup some of that money he's left behind through weight problems and inactivity over the years.

Nothing drives me crazy like a boxer with potential who is inactive. Daniel Santos was the same way. And we saw what happened to him.

 

Style wise Guzzy is cut from the same cloth, but not skill wise. There are very few who are on the level of Floyd in technical skills. If Guzzy is truly great he'll show it with Ali! There are capable journey men to give elite fighters trouble....on their off nights. I was big on joan before but as he stepped up and didnt perform I considered him "not living" up to his potential. Guzzy is very soild defensively but he still gets tagged far more often than a guy like Mayweather. Cald and Floyd should be in a class by themselves. I'll take your comments and give Joan more respect. After all he's a very solid champion and he definitley has a style that could present problems for Ali if I'm over rating him. I just look at Ali and see a smaller version of PW who I feel is the future of boxing...if he can get some fights.

You make a point that is very good! Talent is definitely there for Joan....but he's the type of fighter who needs to stay ACTIVE...to stay sharp and he's just not active enough. He had a decent layoff before Soto whom I thought he would school! The layoff and inactivity will cause a fighter of his make up to go stale.
