Highly regarded on these forums, especially in some p4p lists based on ability... But what do you guys think.... What do you see in Guzman that makes him an elite level fighter:think [yt]m8g9rjqkD7k[/yt] Full fight link here: http://www.boxingvideosonline.com/2008/01/joan-guzman-vs-terdsak-jandaeng-video.html Guzman to me has some glaring inconsistencies.... This fight in particular is a fairly ugly one, against a less then exciting opponent. For a guy who takes times off during rounds, gets tagged a lot, and who had a reasonably close call against Barrios.... Why all the hype? At 32, what is he going to do with his career from here? How do you see him going against Manny Pac or Juan Diaz. Do you he has either the movement or the power to keep either guy off him, and from just bullying him around the ring?? Do you believe his superior combination punching and boxing ability to be enough to defeat these top guys who are naturally bigger?? Please provide analysis:good * Poll is multiple choice, but with public voting enabled. So if you decide to be a donkey, everyone will see!!*
Anybody who peopl thinks they can pose a threat to Pac is overhyped.. Just like Valero & Gamboa.. Guzman is good, but people make him out to be like he's the next best thing in boxing.. Guzman would get tagged a lot by Pacquiao..
Exactly.... He would get tagged a HELL of a lot for a guy who relies heavily on his skills. And unlike Morales, doesn't really possess any sort of punching power to keep him at bay. He took the punches from Soto fairly well... But Pac IMO is a totally different story. He doesn't have the reach or the movement to potshot either, not to the extent of a FMJ anyway IMO. The only way he really beats Pac is by outfighting him with his fast hands. A VERY hard thing to do:think
He is an exciting fighter yes, although he has had boring fights like most fighters. No one is denying that. What i am looking for though, is to people to accurately assess his head to head ability. Reality is, he gained a massive 18 pounds from the weight in before the Sosa fight. He WILL NOT be staying at 130 for long. He is not very powerful though at his current weight, even despite his seemingly large size advantage. Against some big 135 pound guys, this will obviously become even more apparent. A lot of people are placing Guzman in their top 10's (and very high up at that) based on head 2 head and p4p ability. I just want to hear from different people on the boards, why this is so, and analysis for both these fights!
Guzman had trouble with Barrios, barely winning by SD, not to mention Barrious was deducted points after repeated low blows mid fight and even had a close fight if you will say, against Beltran.. He hasn't had a KO since early 2004.. Guz definitely needs to work on his movement and his power isn't all that, especially if he moves up in weight.. He's getting better IMO, but getting hit a few times in the face by the likes of Pacquiao, he'll be looking dazed and confused.. No way Guzman is a top 10 p4p fighter.. I wouldn't even put him in my top 20 as of right now..
The problem I see with Guzman is that when he has an opponent hurt he tends to go into a flurry, with the punches having no real effect because they are mostly slaps more than anything else.
Very good fighter; appears so have a bit of everything: speed, power (deterent power rather than real one-punch KO power at the weight he is fighting at), good footwork, great upper body/head movement, and a good chin. A bit of a defensive master: blocks a lot on the elbows and arms, and can also stand in the pocket for quite a long time without taking a lot of damage. He is great at measuring range, and can counter accordingly. As pointed out he can have lazy spells; but if he can afford to have those lazy periods during fights with two pressers like Barrios and Soto then fair play to him; it just goes to show how good he is. I would say he beats Diaz by a thin decision, picking him off early then having to withstand the bull-rush in the last 4-5 rounds, but I wouldn't think he would be able to deal with Pac's pressure, which would be like Barriosx20; he would probably still be able to block and move enough to make it to the end of the fight and lose by UD.
those scorecards were ridiculous...any judge that scored that for barrios should never be allowed to score fights again. Guzman is quietly building a hell of a resume on high risk/low reward fights.
Very true ILL it kills me how nobody gives him any credit for his win over Soto just because he took some flush punches from him that only happened because Guzman allowed himself to start trading with Soto and he still got the better of him then.
He is good and has taken on the high risk low reward fights which is why hes not recognized by many. I think its time he steps it up and fights the elite. I would love JMM - Guzman. I think JMM beat Guzman in a very tactical yet exciting battle.
It's not that I'm not giving Guzzy credit, it's that ya'll are giving him too much credit.. He beats Barrios & Soto and suddenly he has the skill to dominate Pacquiao and any other 130/135 lb'er?? If you call fighting Soto and others such a high risk fight, what would call him fighting the top contenders? Dont get me wrong, I like Guzman and all, and thought myself he defeated Soto clearly even from taking flush punches, but he's not at the top of his game right now and at the age of 32, I'm not sure if he will, and if he does, it won't be for long.. I'm not disrespecting or discrediting the guy here, but he does seem to be a little overrated here on esb..
If beating the THEN #3 B+ level fighter in the division by 9-3, 10-2 type scores is not enough to warrant him as a top in 130. Barrios fight was not close either and he just like Soto is one of the avoided high risk guys. Manny Pac would be an easier fight for him than Juan Diaz due to strength, styles and intangibles. Pac is not going to be able to KO him, so he'll have to try to outwork and get countered silly in the process, Guzman's defence style will just bring Pac right into his fight as Pac gets wild. Guzman 8-4 would be my prediction.
