Exactly. People should attribute this to their opponents, not weight draining, illnesses, or injuries. Another one that gets to me: Toney didn't look the same against Danny Batchelder as he did when he fought Iran Barkley.
Here are my thoughts... I think that Guzman is deserving of a top p4p spot based on ability. I think that he is a prolific combination puncher, and with Joe C on the decline, possibly the best in the sport. A fighter with a great chin, who isn't a devestating puncher, but not a light one either as some think. A guy though who sometimes needs to straighten up his punches, and has a tendancy to leave his chin exposed whilst winging punches. I think looking at JMM, that he is definitely on the decline. I don't think he could outbox Guzman, and think Guzman could beat him reasonably comfortably. I think that Guzman would have some real trouble though vs both Pac and Diaz. He just doesn't possess a good, or hard enough jab to really keep these guys off. And his style of defense would mean he would be eating shots from bigger fighters. I think his style of fighting would play right into the hands of Pac, and i'm not sure how he would go taking flush shots from one of the best offensive fighters in the sport.
Pac is getting under rated on these boards, possibely due to the huggers. If guys like Barerra and Marquez couldn't outbox and counter punch Pac, i very much doubt Guzman can. He isn't as polished a counter puncher as these guys are. Basically, he will need to outfight Pac. To take advantage of the sometimes non-existent defence of Pac and the poor balance, and unleash prolific combinations. However, i think this is a very very tough fight for him. Pac just has so much stamina, is so relelntless, and so unorthadox at times with his offense. If Guzman eats shots like he was prepared to do against Soto, he will get KTFO. He ate WAY too many punches in that fight, and will need to operate a little bit more carefully against Pac. Picking his spots. IMO this is virtually a pick em fight, although i would tend to swing more towards Pac at this stage.
I think that Guzman could beat Diaz, although in a very very tough fight again. This once again is a pick em fight virtually. Guzman won't be able to keep Diaz on the outside. So it will become a real dog fight, if there every was one. The big x factor will be how a guy like Guzman handles the strength of someone like Diaz. Guzman is technically superior on the inside, with the faster hands. Diaz has the greater stamina though, and sometimes the tighter D on the inside. Both of these fights would be fantastic matches. I think Guzman v Pac is the most exciting fight in boxing right now, in terms of stylistic match ups. Cotto v Floyd is the one that everyone wants to see, but this is FOTY type stuff, with two guys who will create genuine fireworks in the ring.
I've got to say, i really really enjoy watching Guzman fight. He is getting on though, and really needs these couple big fights to finish his career. This is his legacy right here. Pac, JMM, Diaz, he has them all at his fingertips. This is who he needs to be going for, not rubbish like Arthur. He will destroy Arthur with ease, no one really wants to see this fight. Not when there are so many better things that he could be doing with his career at this point.
A Mexican fighter like Soto, who didn't have much of an amateur career and has constantly been improving in his pro career has no real "prime". Why do you think his workrate wasn't the same and he wasn't comfortable unloading punches the same way he was unloading them against the one dimensional Juarez? Juarez's style isn't very difficult for a good counterpuncher, Guzman's is extremely difficult for anyone. I would actually say Soto was a slightly better fighter when he fought Guzman than when he fought Juarez.. he was more experienced and had more confidence. Guzman was just way too tricky and skilled for him, he couldn't figure him out. He fought extra tentatively because he was getting countered himself worse than ever in his career. Soto is in his 20's and he hasn't gone through any wars that would affect him greatly in between the Juarez and Guzman fights.. unless you think his toe to toe epic battle with Bobby Pac took a lot out of him.
He isn't under rated mate, and i wasn't bagging him. Just trying to provoke some discussion. Provide some analysis please!!
He's been calling Pac out ever since he was at 122. Guzman wants to fight the best, but no promoter wants their star fighter fighting him. Marquez couldn't outbox and counter Pac? Did you watch the fights? Guzman wouldn't need to "outfight" Pac, he would fight him defensively and use his movement very effectively. His style is about as bad as it gets for Pac. And if JMM had enough stamina to beat Pac this year (or have a close fight with him if you believe Pac really won), Guzman will too. Plus, Guzman has a better chin than Marquez and will be able to take Pac's punches when he needs to. He is extremely underrated. On the ESB, most people don't think very highly of him and outside of the ESB it's 10x worse.
The last part of your post is stupid. He can't be considered the best at 130 or 135, because he hasn't fought elite comp. Guys like Pac, Marquez etc all have and have emerged victorious, and proved themselves against the best. How is he the best... Based on your unbiased opinion... hahaha... Sorry, not quite enough for me. Great fighter, but you need to fight the best before you can be the best. At the moment, he has the potential to beat those top guys. But thats all it is at this point. Potential.
Guzman gets hit a hell of a lot more then JMM, and is deinitely not as technically sound. JMM had moments and rounds where he fought well, but overall was getting tagged and overwhelmed by the Pac offense. HAVE YOU WATCHED THE FIGHT?? I was about as close a fight as you can get. I surely wouldn't say JMM counter punched him effectively, otherwise he wouldn't have been tagged so much, knocked down, and lost rounds. Guzman has never ever been in there with a guy on Pacs level who punches like Pac. How would you know his chin will withstand the punishment.... You point to the stamina of JMM.... When it is one of Guzman's biggest weaknesses. This is pretty much a pickem fight. Pac will give Guzman fights, and vice versa.
To me, Marquez and Pac can't be considered the best either because they have never fought Guzman, who is clearly a big threat to them and a true elite fighter. I would favor Guzman over everyone 130-135, that's why I consider him the best. Again, until it's proven otherwise, I will continue to think that. Guzman doesn't get hit "a hell of a lot more then JMM". Did you watch JMM vs Jaendang? How would you rate his defense in that fight compared to Guzman's defense against Jaendang? Anyways.. this doesn't matter. JMM didn't just have "moments and rounds" where he fought well. He outboxed and countered Pac for a large majority of their first fight and at the very least, more than half of the Pac fight. Most big Pac fans gave JMM 6 rounds. More than half of the posters here had JMM winning. Even past his prime with fading reflexes/stamina, JMM had a very significant amount of success outboxing and countering Pac effectively over 12 rounds (AND he closed stronger than the younger Pac), it's a fact. Guzman's chin is better tha JMM's and that's proven. He has never even been slightly affected by any punch in his entire career. He's been hit flush by Barrios, a puncher at 130 and he took those punches like they were nothing. Pac isn't going to be hurting him with single exchanges. He also isn't going to be landing on him enough to wear him down to the point where Guzman gets completely broken down. "Guzman has never been in there with a guy on Pac's level".. blah blah blah.. Pac has never been in there with someone that has Guzman's style and talent. Guzman's only weakness is his stamina, but it won't be a big problem against Pac. He knows how to conserve his energy throughout a fight and he will make Pac fight more tentatively than he's ever been in his career at 122+ (I'm sure of this). Pac will have HUGE problems with Guzman's movement and footspeed. His balance issues are still present and he's open to good counterpunchers. Guzman's handspeed is still great and his punches are harder to see coming than JMM's. His style will puzzle Pac and you will see Pac the most frustrated he's ever been since the Sanchez fight. One other thing about Pac to note. He's on the decline now. His stamina isn't what it was when he fought Barrera for the first time. Although he has improved technically, he's become less of the machine like fighter that he was back then. Pac will only win rounds that Guzman gives away.. maybe about 3 rounds. He will not be hurting Guzman and he will be giving him easy targets all night. His style is extremely easy to adjust to for Guzman right from the start and Guzman has the chin/confidence/toughness to not "fight scared" against Pac like many fighters have in the past to a certain degree. It's not a pick-em fight. Guzman should be heavily favored. He has been the worst possible matchup for Pac for years now and if you analyze the matchup without the silly mentality that "Guzman has never faced an elite fighter, so that makes him inferior to Pac/JMM in some way", then you should clearly see why Guzman is a nightmare for Pac. Now explain to me how JMM "couldn't outbox or counter Pac" again..
Because its totally subjective... What you guys deem to be an excellent analysis, both as Guzman's biggest supporters on this site, will probably be vastly different to everyone elses. If you agree with it, thats fine, i know your a Guzman supporter so it really comes as no suprise. Trying to reply in work time, but there are some points in that which are certainly off.
