Who U got between two of Britain's best middleweights, Jock McAvoy, powerful puncher of the 1930s, and Randy Turpin of the 2 memorable bouts with Ray Robinson ?...The winnah is...?
both Box/fighters, with Turpin the more 'upright' rangy boxer & scrapper, McAvoy the crouched boxer, in fighter and harder hitter, though Turpin can punch too. oddly BB, the same man who raised Turpin's hand in that first fight against SRR stated of McAvoy, that he was "the most merciless unrelenting fighter..." McAvoy fought UP out of his weight regularly, this too seemed to die down after the war to the point that smaller & bigger animals rarely caged off by the mid late 50s, where it was the done thing in Britain among the top men. anyway, I know who I would bet on, based on all I've READ, Studied and seen, but I think we better leave it to "the Historian" because it seems that all other sourced script is not quite good enough. even the Holy Bible after all, though a few hands lead in the writing thereof, the Voice - GOD - behind it, is indeed the only AUTHOR of the truth. good fight though.
Great match up Bert.I'll wait for more responses. N B I don't see what referee Eugene Henderson's opinion has to do with this discussion,to my knowledge he was never the third man in a McAvoy fight.:huh
he was one of Britain's A Star Leading Referee's, he handled & seen them all and one of the few sanctioned to Ref WORLD Title fights... he 'coincidently handled one of the matches BB refers to, and he wrote a book about his time as the 3rd man in British Rings. a reliable assessor of the two.
I've read extracts from his book " Box On" . He didn't" handle" McAvoy and that is my point. In fact he didn't handle too many contests at all ,major or otherwise ,one world title fight, one European title fight, and four British title fights. Compare other A Star referees . Wally Thom Refereed : 19 British title bouts. 2 World title bouts. Roland Dakin Refereed : 22 British title bouts. 10 World title bouts. I European title bout. Harry Gibbs Refereed: 20 British title bouts. 25 World title bouts. 6 European title bouts. Even Eugene Corri ,who started in the 1890's has: 3 British title bouts. 3 European title bouts. Sid Nathan Refereed: 17 British title bouts. 6 World title bouts. 5 European title bouts. Henderson's record looks very thin against those referees and," handled them all ,"does not apply. N. B. Perhaps the fact that he was Scottish has something to do with your assessment of him?
BoxRec again... it's not complete for most of the fighters and the referees. infact top ref's actually take part in more bouts than most fighters
Oh, being Scottish means _uck all to me. I lived my life split between 3 countries and most of it outside of Britain. and I like England better than both Scotland & Canada.
You keep saying this but Henderson's own book doesn't list any more fights and if he has more, so do those I named, so he still remains the little man on the the totem pole whatever way you slice it. Ive shown top refs do have busy and long careers with the examples I provided . Henderson did not officiate at many contests at all ,and over a third of them were in his native Scotland ,for example he only once refereed outside the UK . I just corrected your statement that," he had handled and seen them all,"when it is glaringly obvious that he hadn't! You are not one to let inconvenient facts get in the way are you Jim?
