Joe Hipp is one of my favorites. He was as tough as they come and would always give his all in the ring. Often Hipp is underrated in the skills department, but I personally loved his body attack and that sneaky left uppercut of his, and his power is better than most give him credit for.

I once was honored by having Joe hold the punch mitts for me for a couple of rounds during one of our meetings (super nice guy btw) and he threw back about 5-10 jabs at half power, and let me tell you, they were very thudding and heavy handed even then when he was probably around 46-47 years old. It’s one of my favorite boxing memories in life and I will always cherish it.

Let this thread be a tribute to one of the toughest warriors in the history of our sport who would be a handful for anybody in his best night.

Hell, yeah. Love Joe Hipp. Tough as old boot leather. Thought he was doing well against Seldon, too, but his face betrayed him.

On that trailer for the Joe Hipp movie they have a Crazy Horse quote from 1821, tho he wasn't born until around 1840. That's a bit odd.

Loved Joe Hipp. If he had just laid off of that fried bread he'd have done even better,

Yeah he broke Tommy’s jaw and Morrison broke both of his hands from all of the leather he was landing on Joe.

One hell of a fight. I try to watch it every couple of years and have never found myself not standing throwing air punches and shouting despite knowing the outcome lol.

How could you not love Joe Hipp, and respect the hell out of him. That man fought his heart out every time.

I remember watching it live on ABC. I remember former St Louis Cardinal offensive lineman Dan Dierdorf was one of the commentators and he was fired up for Hipp. It was a bruising fight with Tommy having his jaw broke and I think Hipp had a fractured eye socket? Hipp was tough as nails!!!

Side note, I am from St Louis and I use to see Dan Dierdorf all the time at local boxing events back in the 80's and 90's. The man just loved boxing and it didn't matter if it was pro or an amateur smoker. Really good dude.

First time I ever saw Hipp was in 1989 on ESPN ( I believe ) against Cleveland Woods. Hipp was like 6-1 and Woods was 4-0. A friend of mine was over. It was a nice little fight where Hipp ended up taking a decision in a four round bout. Never thought I’d hear about him again but a few years later he rose to fringe contender status. Saw him a few more times before he lost to Bert Cooper. Hipp wasn’t bad. Not a great fighter but certainly a very tough guy

Unfortunately I haven’t seen the Cleveland Woods fight, but I’m hopeful that someday it will be added to YouTube along with the rest of Joe’s fights.
