Its unfortunate he didn't beat Seldon. Hipp would of gotten a world title, a mega payday vs Tyson, and would certainly put up a better effort in losing than Seldon did against Tyson. So, really it would of been a win for everyone on the planet not named Bruce Seldon and team.

I remember it being decent but it was like 34-35 years ago.

Couldn’t agree more with all points made. Hipp’s team really let him down in the Seldon fight with a truly ridiculous game plan that played right into Bruce’s strengths and Joe’s weaknesses.

Had they let Joe fight his type of fight I think he would have stood a very good chance of stopping Seldon. That would have changed everything for him and his family.

There was a thread sometime back that asked people which fight would they most like to change the outcome of and while I have several, if I had to choose one, I would without hesitation make Joe Hipp the winner of that Seldon fight. He would have been a tough champ, even if only holding the title for a brief time.

I was always impressed with how well Dierdorf knew boxing considering that wasn't the sport he played as a pro. He and Alex Wallau made a great team. They were knowledgeable, well spoken and respectful of the fighters.

He use to be at a lot of the amateur boxing events in St louis. Haven't seen him in years but he would always be there wearing his Michigan Wolverines gear. Last time I saw him was probably 15 years ago and he could barely walk.

That's too bad. A long NFL career really ruins a lot of these guys.

I think Dan is one of those former athletes who took lessons from his pro career and applied them to his post-football life: he studied film, he researched fighters to prepare himself and he kept getting ‘reps’ on ABC and used them to make himself better and better.

For me, Alex Wallau and Dan Dierdorf is my second-favorite boxing broadcast tandem behind Ryan and Clancy. And as much as I loved the latter, the gap isn’t huge.

As for Joe Hipp, count me among the ‘who can help but love this guy’ sentiments in this forum. Tough physically and mentally and always brought it.

I had the good fortune to see Joe fight live back in 1991 when he beat David Bey on a USA Network “Tuesday Night Fights” card. On the same card, Bert Cooper beat Loren Ross and a young Lou Savarese knocked out somebody in one round. Good times.

Tough guy, unfortunately very prone to facial swelling and cuts.

No disrespect intended, but the Seldon vs Hipp fight was one of the worst « championship » I have ever saw, too little action between them.
Hipp seemed a very tough guy for sure, and would have given Tyson an harder challenge than Seldon.

Loved the Hipp Morrison war! Tough guy not the most skilled or best athlete but ton of heart and just enough talent to be hard night work

Looks can be deceiving. Joe was actually a really good athlete, a good wrestler and promising football player. That knee wrap he wore in the ring was the result of his football days. His amateur record was also really good, 119-9.

Decent contender, but mostly just a rough and tumble guy who was fun to watch.

No problem. I live very near where he went to high school. Joe is just one tough hombre.
