Found this news story about the fight: Bugner, in Return, Wins in 3d Round AP Published: October 29, 1982 LONDON, Oct. 28— Joe Bugner, the former European heavyweight boxing champion, returned to the British ring after six years tonight and knocked out Winston Allen of Wales in the third round. Bugner, who is 32 years old and was 32 pounds heavier than his opponent, knocked out Allen with a right-hand punch as the bell sounded ending the third round. Allen, a native of the West Indies, had butted Bugner for the third time before Bugner, in anger, knocked Allen down. After Allen was counted out, he reacted violently. His seconds pinned him against the ropes to stop him from charging across the ring.
Sorry but...**** on 'em. Never has so little been done with so much. Great assets. Jab, a stiff right, big guy with a good chin. I really liked him until Kuala Lampur when he gave a 'super' ***** I just want to survive 'effort' against Ali. Thank goodness for the Galindez-Ahumada undercard at the closed circuit we went to that night. I've never understood why so many see him as a great fighter. Show me ONE quality win in his career! Has-beens don't count obviously. If anyone wants to bring up his over-40 efforts, that's fine but I don't really care. I really was a fan until his title fight with Ali; after that? Just look at his record.
One of the most frustrating under achievers ever. Had a load going for him size,strength,skill, good jab decent punch,excellent chin,but basically the man was a pacifist.
In all fairness it may have been an issue. Just now and then the spite would come out. Against Richard Dunn who I know wasn't even B level he blasted him out of there in no time which is what he should have been expected to do. Then of course he somehow managed to lose a decision against Jack Bodell. There's not much more to be said really.
There's a glaring example right there. That tall lanky southpaw turd was the epitomy of class B ineptness.
I don't think Joe was ever that passionate about the sport. He was big, athletic, strong and tough but at heart I think he was a gentle person and simply didn't have any natural aggression or mongrel and simply liked competing rather than laying it all on the line for victory. It made him a lesser fighter but a happier and better person and has given him a much better life than some more lauded types who couldn't switch off that vicious streak that made them excel as fighters ie your Monzon, Tyson and Valero types.
