Had no idea. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/21333547/heartbreaking-story-muhammad-ali-opponent-dementia/ Always liked the big fella, seemed he was always destined to be the "bad guy" by the fickle British public after he beat the beloved Henry Cooper, (a win I agreed with the referee, I thought he nicked it).
I had no idea about this either. It's an awful thing to endure. My thoughts are with him and his family. Props to Colin Heart for visiting him.
That makes me sad. His daughter went to school with either Laila or Hana Ali. I forgot which one. Vastly underrated boxer.
I really don't wanna sound cruel, but I thought Bugner was already dead. Sad to hear this. Dementia is terrible.
It's horrifying. My grandmother is going through it and she can barely even remember things she ate 20 minutes ago. Her mind is regressing to a toddler like state. Prayers for Bugner, hope he gets the care he needs and his family looks after him. It's disgusting when family member don't get their older relatives the facilities for proper treatment.
Damn shame. I was totally unaware. Though it has hit poor Joe earlier, it’s sort of similar to Chuvalo, in so far Joe being notably sharp, intelligent and articulate into his advancing years..but then, this stuff still hits and hits hard.
It’s sad. Strangely enough I remember Joe on an Australian sports show years ago and the panel were complimenting him on how good he looked and how sharp he was as opposed to his old foe Muhammad Ali. I recall Joe saying words to the effect that, yes while was in good shape at that time in another 20 years it might be different due to the nature of the sport of boxing. Sadly it’s come to pass for Joe. I hope he gets the care he needs and his remaining years are comfortable and pain free as possible.
Sorry to hear but having seen this story play out so many times and for so long I must say it is the wages of the game. I can't cheer for the sport on one hand and then be mortified at the results for its participants. He reached higher highs than any of us here. I wonder if he would trade that for better life in his 70's. Either way, perhaps fighting to the age of 50 was ill-advised. I hope he is comfortable.
