I've got Ray in this one. Ray had one hell of jab and was tough as nails. I don't think Joe could hurt him and get his respect.
He was famous for it. Richard "Second to Dunn" "Even Ali had to walk away, once Dunn started his tirade. At one point he had both Dundee and Bundini Brown, in an headlock! Not a guy to mess around with..
I just found one account that kind of put it on Joe for starting up with Dunn, criticizing Richard’s fight with Ali and saying Dunn didn’t belong in there and the impression from the masses was more ‘at least he tried when he had his chance, Joe, you didn’t,’ which Dunn ran with. Escalated from there I guess.
The quote that really got to Joe was when Richard said he had put a picture of Bugner in his toilet so he could get used to p...ing on him. This was 1976 and that was seen as crossing the line. The other factor that wound Bugner up was that a lot of people laughed at the quote. The rest, as they say, is history.
Yea, I go with this, in fact apart from the aforementioned Dunn, Bugner didn't really hurt many opponents, thinking he might have been a pacifist masquerading as a fighter, mind you that said, he was tough, strong, and very fit, his chin was tested by some big hitters, and stood the test. stay safe guys.
Bugner certainly hurt Joe Frazier in 1073. Ali said Joe was one of his most difficult opponents. Bugner also should have beaten Ron Lyle but seemed to run out of energy or ideas in the last three rounds and dropped a close decision. For the pure theatre of Bugner when annoyed, have a look at his fight with Winston Allen.
