The funny thing with Joe was that more often then not he was concerned with defence first and foremost - perhaps a hangover from his pro debut KO shock, which could really happen to any 17 year old with no Am career to speak of, when Joe fought Jurgen Blin he fiddle faddled to a points win, but in the rematch he let s few punches go naturally, and flattened Blin, against Frazier Bugner didnt have much time to think, was hurt and floored in the 10th, Joe got up and fought from the heart, he immediately shook Frazier, and Bugner made the last two rounds uncomfortable for Frazier, to such an extent that many wondered what would have been the outcome if Bugner had got angry Earlier, or the fight was a 15 rounder ? Joe also shook Ron Lyle in their fight, but then when into his defensive shell again and the one paced Lyle took a close decision that a more fired up bugner could of won. Joe's problems were a safety first mentality, with Richard Dunn Joe knew there was no Danger, so turned Tiger. ultimately Joe was never in love with the game and saw it as a way to earn money. but if someone could of stoked some fire into that belly......
I don't think some posters understand the reality of being in the ring. I'm not even particularly citing anyone in this thread either. It isn't always simple as easy as throwing punches because an opening is there, or letting your hands go. It takes a lot of courage simple to let loose and trade. The faults that some commentators find in certain boxers performances sound the same as many casual boxing fans making judgments from a distance. Considering Bugner fought in perhaps the best HW division of all time, had no amateur career, was sparked out in his first ever fight and killed a man, I'd say he had some pretty legitimate reasons for being safety first at times.
Yeah. If he was fighting like this against Ali and Frazier who knows what could've happened. Bugner was a good heavyweight. I think I'm going to make a small tribute of him later.
Christ, i just had a flashback reading this post. I watched it on 'World of Sport' i think. Bugner put his glove to his head as if to check for blood before walking straight over and KOing the guy
