This one did the rounds here perhaps 2 or 3 months ago. Interesting one though - we certainly haven't had many better than Joe - regardless of where he was born (Hungary) and where he fought out of (England).
er....only Joe wasn't Australian. I do think he was underrated though, especially in Britain, because he was the "villain" in his big fights and wore the black hat against two very popular fighters in Cooper and Bruno.
Joe?? His best years were spent fighting O/S. Coming to Australia and beating some pensioner Yanks doesn't hold water, especially when Joe was on the pension anyway.. It's more than fair to say that his record amongst the H/W's is the best of the last 50 years. In fact, his record outweighs any Aussie career H/W for over 100 years.
I heard that he wanted to represent Australia's boxing team for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Was this true ? I'm a Brit, and always liked Joe,but he frustrated the hell out of us over here at times.
Joe is # 1. The only guy close is another import Peter Jackson. Still Joe gets my vote. Beating Tillis, Bey & Page is better than Kali beating Lamon Brewster (i know) and DaVarryl Wiliamson and Jimmy Thunder beating Trevor Berbick.
Have a look at Bugner fighting Joe Frazier on youtube. he was a helluva boxer in his heyday. and a really great guy as well.
I think Joe wanted to represent us in the discus (he was a schoolboy champ at it(. I think he failed to qualify but it made some headlines for him anyway
Bobby, yeah, but Boneclutcher was past his best, not as good as Lamon or Davarryl. I wsa in Joe's corner for Boneclutcher fight. I'm completely impartial though.
