If Joe stayed on to fight in this, what would you think would of happened?? would he be past his peak by the end of this??? Would of be a Calzaghe v Ward final. For me, Joe would of won this hands down, he was that good. What do u guys think??
a couple of years before his retirement coming off the lacy and kessler wins definatly, after the hopkins and jones fight MAYBE.he was declining not as fast as most do but he retired at the sensible time on top of the world.had a great undefeated career IF he had continued im sure he would have made the final v ward and i still think he would have won a very close fight(oakland aside). iv spoke to joe since the super six started(after the kessler v froch fight)and he said he would have loved a tournament like that to come up when he was still active, felt he could have proved more than he did but he said "what will be will be,im proud of my career and what i accomplished, unbeaten world champ for over ten years, undisputed champ and won titles when stepping up to light heavyweight" who can argue with that?the man is a legend and a class act.
Calzaghe always found a way to win, I think a Ward fight would have been close, depending on where the fight was it could have gone either way.
kessler gave calzaghe a hard fight if i remember right on the other hand kessler looked out his depth agains ward, he was getting ****ed up! lets be honest ward aint great to watch because he's akward and he spoils but he's special, he basically won it easy! imo he's jst too good for joe who struggles against spoiler/awkward type fighters anyway e.g. hopkins! then add wards skill on top of that. joe can match him with speed, and heart, it would defo go to points imo.
Kessler wasn't the same fighter vs Ward that he was against Calzaghe. His feet were slower and the sharpness wasn't quite there, nor his timing. Inevitable really considering he'd only fought Sartison then a couple of clowns in the interim period. The Calzaghe fight is one that he ought to have won IMO. He was controlling it and let the fight slip away.
you have to accept that calzaghe would have avoided super six. the guy always avoided challenges. dont try to make him something he wasnt now after he retired
Joe Calzaghe was undisputed super-middleweight champion. Carl Froch has never been undisputed, nobody avoids Carl Froch. Fighters avoided Joe Calzaghe, great fighters are feared. Even still Joe Cazlaghe has a better resume than Carl Froch and has beaten better fighters.
He'd of lost IMO, He was coming to the end. He knew this himself as well IMO. That's why he got out. He was still operating at a good level, but that comp went on a long time and i think Joe would of lost to Ward. Joe was being dropped and not looking at his best. The motivation was waning more and more as well. Prime for Prime Joe beats Ward, Although not sure if Ward has even shown his optimum level yet. If the comp was in his prime, i'd of backed him to win. Although it wouldn't of been plain sailing for Joe.
He was a great fighter - I think he was better then anyone in the competition bar perhaps ward- ward calzaghe might have being interesting. However there is zero chance calzaghe would have travelled to his opponents back yard unless he was absolutely forced to and his injuries would have scuppered any shot he had of winning the tournament.
