Joe calzaghe appreciation thread

Calzage is one of the boxers who polarises opinion most on here. I tend to put him in the middle. He was a good fighter and under-rated in many ways: he had great stamina, work-rate and heart and has some good wins over Eubank, Kessler and Hopkins among others. However his resume is a little on the shallow end and slapping style isn't too appealing in many ways.

Sure, Hopkins was out of his physical prime, but he was still smart and crafty, had the ability to make you fight his fight. Calzaghe was well aware that was going to be a tough, ugly fight.

Plus, It was pretty cool he held two ring belts at once.

I liked it alot, it was very good. It got taken apart, but still, it was good :good.

 

Calzaghe was out of his prime also, possibly further and closer to the end of his career than Hopkins.
Holding the 2 Ring belts at the same time made Calzaghe the first and only fighter ever to do that.

It sort of is but it depends on the environment & situation. People into the Hip Hop culture are going to give you a different perspective. But more or less you look kind of like a tool if you don't take your hat off in most indoor places, at least nice ones. I'm not sure about the movie theater, that's rather casual. Unless you mean Broadway or something and yeah definitely.

forget his record for a minute and look at the accomplishments. Unified 168 and held the RING belt, hen moves to 175 and grabs the RING belt. That's damn good.

Plus he was a consensus top 3 p4p fighter and took the risk of moving up to fight another consensus top 5 p4p fighter. That just doesn't happen much.

And Calzaghe on form was a hell of a fighter and fun to watch.

 

Tyson Fury uploaded that photo to his twatter account. Not sure if any of Gorman's fights were filmed even though he was supposedly fighting until 1992.

Joe Calzaghe utterly and brutally humiliated Roy Jones Jr and made him bleed.

He also beat an Elite Hopkins and even rubbed his ***** against Hopkin's ass.

Watching Calzaghe busting out his dance moves and clowning Roy Jones Jr was an amazing moment.

The Years and years of hard work+dedication finally paid off as Joe forced Roy into a ultimate show down to see who REALLY was the best of the best.

I cried tears of joy as Joe let out a loud whoop at the end of the fight .. signaling yet another historical moment of British Domination over American Legends.

When Joe beat Roy he didn't just do it for himself.
He did it for Nigel Benn, he did it for Chris Eubank he did it for Watson and all the Queen's fighters that Roy blatantly avoided.

As Eubank and Benn were killing each other for their fans. Roy was fighting 9th tier journeymen..


I wanted to see Roy fight Lewis in the early 2000's but watching such a amazing, masterful, and emotionally spirit boner lifting performance as the one Joe delivered was almost as good.


Calzaghe is the greatest SMW fighter of all times and a true knight.

He is deeply missed.

Thanks for the reply. I've never heard Tyson mention him before. Don't know if you've got Bartley's great book, but Big John a fury is mentioned in it a fair bit. Sadly there's no footage of any of Bartley's fights. His last fight was in 1997. There's a great 10 min documentary that Shane Meadows directed in 1995 though for channel 4. I don't know if you've seen it? It's on Youtube. There's a few other bits and pieces on there too, that's been uploaded by his nephew Jerry Gorman.
