I don't think I've ever seen such a corny, roundabout path a fighter has taken to appear "great" than Joe Calzaghe. This is a fighter who forged his "legacy" in a new division with a new belt, hid out with said belt half a world away from the best fighters for A DECADE, beat an American prospect in Lacy, beat a top 5 guy in Kessler, finally crosses the ocean to face a completely shot version of a great in old Roy, and a 43 year old Hopkins, getting knocked down by both in the process. That's the "great" career. This is like if a new belt, the WBX was created, and Mairis Briedis "defended" it in Latvia at Bridgerweight for 10 years of his prime against no one of note, beat Gilberto Ramirez, then came to America to beat a 40 year old, shot Wilder. The depth of resume is not there. The fights were not fought when they mattered. I've seen a similar pattern with the career of Anthony Joshua with taking out old "names" then claiming the top guys of the world around your weight ducked you (Fury, Wilder, Ortiz). I look forward to seeing another thread about how Calzaghe would have completely befuddled Beterbiev, Kovalev, and Bivol (and even Briedis LOL). Super Joe! The GOAT! 46-0!
I'm actually a huge fan of Calzaghe, but your criticisms are all valid....Although I imagine some of the prospective match ups that didn't take place weren't all the fault of he and his team. Also, the Hopkins win is a good one.. A good chunk of Hopkins great feats happened after the Calzaghe bout, and Calzaghe was also relatively past his best himself.. It was his second to last fight.
Damn that thread triggered the balls off you. First of all congratulations, it takes a professional level hater to take a thread about Joe Calzaghe and very quickly turn it into a Anthony Joshua slander post. If you are gonna discredit Joe for everything he done, at least use a better example than Deontay Wilder as your reference to a "Top Guy". Calling Wilder a "Top Guy" Then comparing him to a 40 year old Roy Jones Jr is absolutely ludicrous. Dissecting the resume of Anthony Joshua then making out Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder were out there fighting the best the world had to offer is crazy talk. Fighting 40 Year Old Wladimir Klitschko, Povetkin, Pulev ❌ Fighting 62 year old Luis Ortiz twice ✅ You dismiss the Jeff Lacy win yet the vast majority had him starching Joe Calzaghe inside 3 rounds when it came to pre fight predictions. You dismiss the Hopkins win even though Hopkins was still a World Champion 6 years later beating the same level of opponents Sergey Kovalev was feasting on. Kessler the same guy who went on to beat a peak Carl Froch and is one of Andre Wards better wins.
I watched his career unfold in real time, and I've never been a particular fan. The vast bulk of his career defences were against low level opposition, defending a (then) low level belt, despite claim after claim that the next fight would always be 'the big one.' I just got fed up with him in the end. To Joe's credit, he had enough left in the tank at an advancing age to beat Kessler and Hopkins (very close. Lacy never achieved much before or since. The Jones win a nice farewell, but RJJ had clearly been finished as a top-level operator for years). But I never thought it was coincidence that he sought out B-Hop and Jones when they weren't quite the threats they used to be. I'm not saying he was no good - obviously he was. But I never felt that he tested himself until late on. And was helped by the fact that his main competition (in terms of big name US stars) got knocked off their ageing perches first, while being able to rack up a high number of defences against people you'd never heard of. It's probably an unpopular take but, as a Brit, I always rated Hatton higher for going to the States much earlier and taking on the P4P legends in their primes.
Feel theres a universe where the WBX became a sanctioning body in the 90s to appeal to gen xers who wanted everything to be "extreme'.
You think Calzaghe would beat Kovalev, Briedis, Huck, and draw with Bivol. Please exit the thread. Your opinion is not valued here.
Joe had plenty of good wins. Hopkins got a taste of his own medicine after lording it over Jones when he got his ‘revenge’, Jones a guy that Hopkins couldn’t have beaten with a cricket bat in his prime. Mayweathers record is ‘worse’ if you want to talk about a ‘cheesiness to greatness ratio’
Calzaghe is not even called great by many , rightly or wrongly. Mayweather is often called the goat by quite a lot of people. Mayweather’s record and the level of greatness he is accorded is far more ridiculous than Calzaghe’s standing within the sport based on his record.
Mayweather has defeated over 20 world champions. How many has Calzaghe defeated? I can understand the dislike of Mayweather but his accomplishments are legit.
So are Calzaghe’s, and Eubank, Reid, Kessler, Hopkins, Jones, Woodall, Lacy were all champions. Probably about half as many as Mayweather ? I don’t know. A good handful anyway. But if you want to pick apart an undefeated record Mayweathers is just as bad as Calzaghe’s, or worse, for fighting guys at the right time, or waiting for the most dangerous contemporaries to be past their best (Pacquaio). Also Calzaghe doesn’t have several robberies like Castillo and Maidana like Mayweather does. Mayweather beat many more world champions sure, but if anything he’s overrated based on his record, and Calzaghe is underrated. Hence ‘worse’
Not really, I don’t mind watching his fights but he’s hardly the first guy I’d watch. I don’t really like his style at all, he always looks beatable except he wasn’t. Mayweather obviously had the much greater career but to call him the goat as people do, and then you have posts like the OP’s about someone like Calzaghe is a bit silly.
No one seriously should call Mayweather the “goat” but he has titles from super flyweight up to junior middleweight and defeated champions for his titles. To me the OP’s post is pretty sound but we all have our opinions.
It's these Calzaghe bashing threads that are corny AF.. the guy retired 17 years ago yet he's still pissing u off? He must have done something right that you felt the need to start the 5254th thread telling everyone how 'awful' he was. HOFer. ATG SMW. Beat past present & future champions. Cry more.
