During a recent interview, Joe Calzaghe gave his reason for walking away from the sport and announcing his retirement - before taking a fight with IBF light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, who many saw as the number-one contender to Calzaghe's throne. He felt Dawson was not yet a big enough star to make the fight. The money wasn't there for a fight with Dawson, and Calzaghe wasn't willing to wait around for the money to develop. He wanted to go out on top without a loss on his record.

"I like Chad Dawson, but he's still on his way up. I had spent the last 24 months looking for the right time to get out. The biggest thing in making the decision was whether I still had anything to prove to myself and I haven't. At the moment I'm really happy. My mum's relieved that I have retired and I have got a few things planned, some things on TV and, of course, the promoting," Calzaghe said to The Times Online.

Besides Dawson, Calzaghe felt there weren't any fights on the horizon that were worth sticking around for. All of the guys calling him out were guys he already beat.

“Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins and even Mikkel Kessler were all interested in a rematch, but I've beaten them. Beating them again wouldn't really mean anything. I didn't have the luxury of being a welterweight, where there are lots of big fights that could be made. The fights I was offered were either rematches or ones that don't mean that much," Calzaghe said.

Calzaghe is now focused on his promotional company. His father/trainer Enzo Calzaghe is developing the young talent at their family gym in South Wales.

“Merthyr has got a good history of boxing. Johnny Owen came from there, as did Howard Winstone and another good fighter, Eddie Thomas,” Calzaghe said. "We've got a good team together. Dad is doing most of the work - I wouldn't have it any other way!”

I don't care what reason Joe gives. He's earned the right to retire when the **** he wants for whatever reason he wants.

Sure I'd like a few better names on his resume but good luck to him.

Dawson is'nt ready but the likes of Tocker Pudding was?

Also he needed to remacth Hopkins.

A fight with Johnson would have been good too.

Dawsons a good fighter, but he's nothing as an attraction yet. So fair enough to Calzaghe.

Earning/ marking time fights that he wouldn't have minded taking at 25 years old are not the same type of fights he'd have been looking for at 37 years old.

Dawson would have been interesting but at Calzaghes age he should feel free to retire with his money and his brains intact.

Totaly agree add Omar Sheika and Peter Manfredo to the list as well.
He should have given rematches to both Kessler and Hopkins.Rob Reid should also have got one years ago.Im not that bothered that he didnt fight Dawson or Johnson and if he wants to retire fair enough but he should not give crap excuses like "Dawson isnt ready"to justify his desicion to walk away without taking what would have been a big fight.

Calzaghe will come out of retirement if Hopkins-Dawson is made or if Enzo Macc is turned into a star

Thats the only way if there was one that Joe C would come back, if he was to be upstaged by Enzo Mac. Which wont happen, though i hope and wish for his good self ( enzo ) it could be close or become ( no he isnt on the level or .....zero defeats etc, before i get knocked for this )

Dawson was a threat, definately and i wanted to see that as it would of cleaned the "Nu Breed" slate.

The big bottom line of it is, Joe C wanted a finale in Wales and fair play, it didnt happen. Dawson for me would be awesome and yes i think he is ready as the next or anyone but how would you see Dawson in Wales in front of xxxxxxx amount of people ?

Joe C has seen a/the persons eyes and attitude when it counts....right in front of him !!! I wont doubt his opinnion over mine when it comes to him
    risking his all.

The more fights, the more risk

I certainly wont be surprised. Good call.

He didnt retire as you would expect but then what is , maybe even Joe C dosent know. Not many around him am sure that are in his shoes or honest...............regardless of his record.

    Good call Grant1 :good
