Outclassing an un-defeated #1 opponent when your 35 and he's in his 20's is perhaps the hardest thing to do in boxing. The only question on Clazaghe was how good was his chin. He proved it was very good last night. I think Calzaghe awnswered all questions. He is great fighter. He could make you miss, throw over 100 punches per round, and has unique off tempo style that can target the head or body. All that is left for Calzaghe is to beat other name fighter his age, then retire undefeated.
Calzaghe is excellent, but his resume is simply not strong enough to be considered a great at the moment. That may change in the fullness of time, but it will take at least 20 years before you can really apreciate what Calzaghe gave to boxing and whether he should be considered a great.
Why not? He has 20+ title defense in a row, and is un-defeated. Calzaghe is too good to be in the type of fan pleasing fights that make legands. He did a paint job on Jeff Lacy and just beat a good 168 pound un-defeated champion in Kessler. Kessler will rebound, and when he does it will make Clazaghe's reusme look even better.
Two wins against opponents who may not be excellent (time will tell) is not going to make you great. He won the World Championship when he beat Lacy, so he has made three defences (greatness should never be measured by alphabet crap). Calzaghe has beaten whatever has been put in front of him, but it is not enough to be considered great at the moment. He may years down the line become a great as people apreciate him, but time will be judge of that. Greatness in boxing should be for the very, very few and Joe is not there yet.
eubank, brewer, mitchell, woodhall, reid, lacy, kessler he only has seven significant wins in his entire career.I say he is great in terms of talent like he showed against lacy and kessler, but he is not great in terms of career accomplishments.
He's beaten everyone put in front of him. Can't ask much more of him than that. That said, he should have left Warren years ago. If he had his career defining fights in his late 20's rather than his 30's I don't think many would be questioning his status as an ATG. I hope JC/B-hop happens. Whilst they are both past their prime, I still think Calzaghe wins, and it secures his legacy, and his bank balance.
Joe is a great, great fighter. It is time he was given credit. How can his resume be any less compelling than Bernard Hopkins, Winky Wright, or Mayweather? Time to give credit where credit is due.
I wish he had met RJJ, Ottke, Dariuz and maybe Toney too - I think he would´ve beaten all of them, but HOW I wish those fight had materialized!
His resume exceeds Tszyu now, who is universally considered an ATG in the lower top 100. I'm hoping for a Woods+Dawson combination to end it(he'll be around for 2 or 3 more, I assure you), this would secure him in the top 50. Bute + Dawson would be good also, or even Hopkins + Dawson, notice that Bad Chad is the key? 2 more big fights baby! Then the Calzaghe mafia will never go away!:yep
I know, but realistically there will be 2-3 more fights, because he's still performing at the top level. If he finds 175 easier to make weight, maybe even 4 more fights, because draining to 168 is the most punishing part. The pay off of last night will indeed keep Joe in for at least 2 more fights, because outclassing a fighter as good as Kessler just upped his acclaim massively.
Depends what some of the opponents go on to accomplish. If Kessler and say Dawson(if it happens), go on to establish a great legacy also, and both were outclassed by Joe, then it's significant. I'm thinking 2-3 more fights, if they are meaningful, then that's going to really put him up there.
Lets not go crazy here, Im a fan of Calzaghe but there aint no way he beats a super middle RJJ, thats plainly madness, RJJ would have destroyed him fairly easily, Joe is the 2nd best 168 lbs fighter of all time (granted its a new division), i know Roy didnt stay at 168 for long but if you put the best Joe C in with Roy then your gonna get 1 outcome .. Roy Jones Jr was a phenomenal fighter, Joe is a very very good fighter .. I cant believe that people throughout this site dont recognise Roy as one of the greatest boxers ever when he clearly is, forget about his personality, comparing Joe to Roy is a joke
The 175 Roy would have a tough time, 168 guy that fought Toney wins rather easily and wide, let's not go overboard here. Not that Roy's really all that much greater in terms of ability and skill, just Roy can avoid Calzaghe's gameplan spoiling style due to his own style, Calzaghe excells when a guy comes at him, Roy excells in running and then timing and exploding. Running and then timing and exploding, complete with an incredible lead right hand will gain him a 9-3 victory over Joe. But Calzaghe would defeat anyone else at 168, including most MW's who would have had to move up.
