Joe Calzaghe had Roy Jones SHOOK

Not sure. Prime Jones was never really tested except against Toney, which test he passed with flying colors. I don't know what part of Joe's activity Jones would have used against him. And Joe could take the punches. Even after getting hit in the chin with Roy's forearm bone he stayed right in Jones' face. Calzaghe was a great fighter and would have been a tough fight for anyone, including Jones. Which Jones victim do you think Joe would not have beaten?

 

When Roy Jones fought Joe Calzaghe, Roy was completely, completely, completely shot.

He had zero mobility. None. Could not move. He stood stock still.

He had zero hand speed. It was all gone.

The victory means as much for Calzaghe's legacy as Trevor Berbick's win over Muhammad Ali.

Then, go back, and examine Roy Jones in 2008 versus Calzaghe: Roy Shot.

In 2002, Roy Jones fought 6 rounds with Clinton Woods in which he was not touched, and the fight was ended when Woods was being mercilessly pot-shotted and not throwing back.

In 2004 a shot Roy Jones was knocked out by Glen Johnson.

In 2006 Clinton Woods defeated Glen Johnson in a split decision. The same Clinton Woods who was completely dominated by Roy Jones in 2002.

Shot fighters exist in boxing.

 

Jones had no Chin an no Plan B in a fight he also had issues with Southpaws. Had Calzaghe chosen to step on the gas instead of taunt, embarrass, and clown Jones the last 3 rounds he would have KOed him. Fragile hands and all. A

 

i feel kind of bad for roy that he will always be remembered for 4 things


1 - for being a proven banned anabolic steroids drug cheat

2 - for having one of the worst glass jaws in boxing history

3 - for having no plan B, not having the ability to adapt

4 - for folding like a lawn chair everytime he faced adversity

Back then he had an image to protect.

 

kind of like how you'll be remembered for being a dumb ass. maybe they'll remember that fighter of the decade thing, not sure. calzaghe will be forgotten except in wales where this generation of fight fans doesn't know what a great fighter looks like.

 

this was during the fight and kellerman added that "this is what happens when fighters fight too long." you get people thinking it could have happened in their primes and we know joe wouldn't have dared stepped in the ring with jones then.

There was never much talk of Roy vs Calzaghe back in the day.

If anything, this fight shows that Roy was "SHOOK" by Michalczewski.

 

Would have been interesting. I just see Roy KOing Joe abruptly at sometime before the later rounds. Joe was able to be hit with big unseen shots and Roy delivered those and with all that speed and all those angle, Roy was borderline devistating in his prime. Calzaghe would have most likely walked into the big one and I don't think Joe became the great strategist he was until after his hands became brittle. I see the fight being somewhat competitive and action filled untill Jones stops him abruptly.

 

Was it an Allen Iverson type cross over or a Derrick Rose type crossover?
