He wasn't denied by Jones earlier at all. NOBODY was interested in a Jones vs Calzaghe fight back in the day. Joe was an unknown 168 fighter, who the Americans had only seen a handful of times against Thornberry, Starie and McIntyre.
Taking it out of context? It was from his own AUTOBIOGRAPHY! He HIMSELF said that Roy was shot. There's nothing more to say. He wanted Roy's name on his resume for a good pay day.
Joe knew that the fight with Roy was going to be his last. The only way he'd have carried on, his if he'd have lost. He'd been boxing 25 years at that point, and he told everyone it would be his last fight. So the knockdown didn't play a part in his decision.
He told his son that Roy wasn't the same fighter as what he'd been, in 2008, in the build up to the fight. His autobiography was written in 2007. He knew Roy was no longer a huge threat.
Joe had been chasing the fight for years. He'll have told his kid not to worry if he ever fights him long before 07
He hadn't been chasing the fight for years, don't be silly. Roy was in America at 175. Joe was in Britain at 168. America had only seen him a handful of times. The David Starie fight was a stinker, aswell as the Rick Thornberry one. Then they saw him fight McIntyre, and he mentioned Roy's name afterwards. But after the dust had settled, he continued to fight at 168 in Britain. Fighting at 168 in Britain, wasn't going to get him a big money fight against the best fighter in the world who fought at 175. HBO and the American public had no real interest in seeing him fight Roy. If he'd genuinely have chased Roy, he'd have moved up to 175, fought in America, and moved up the rankings.
I think everyone expected it to be close. It's not like Hopkins was looking shot at any point leading up to the fight.
No one has ever had an answer for this.. The just ignore it and keep repeating theirselves.. Much like an ignorant child.:yep Other than Joe's occasional off the wall statement that contradicts other statements made about not chasing him, he did absolutely nothing to get Roy in the ring. In all honestly, I think Roy would have been more than happy to fight Joe, had Joe had a big name in America and it could be the Superfight it was supposed to be.
Calzaghe fans are generally just flag waving fan boys who don't know anything about boxing and I remember these people saying that Calzaghe was going to "Lacy" Hopkins, Hopkins was just too old, Hopkins was just a middleweight, if Taylor can beat him imagine what God a.k.a Joe Calzaghe was going to do to him etc etc. Calzaghe was also a huge betting favorite here in Britain. The fight showed why Calzgahe "didn't want tough fight", "would want the crown jewels" and had a convenient fear of flying while elite guys like Hopkins and Jones were in their primes. The same fear of flying that he miraculously recovered from once Hopkins and Jones were old men.
That's right. You can't genuinely CHASE someone when you fight in a different weight class to them. It's ridiculous!
typical fanboy?? that is your defence after i used your post as toilet paper? what ever makes you feel better. :rofl:rofl:rofl what you write just after that is pure genius. you're a credit to the delusional community. he fought Roy because it made the most sense financially. i would have preferred the Dawson fight due to him being prime, but Joe wanted to make the most in his last fight. nothing wrong with that. he'd gone through a divorce so the most money was what he was after. Dawson would have brought nothing but peanuts. i'm sure you would have done the same if it was a situation that involved you. but you'll probably post more crap. why would Joe fight Pavlik after he was exposed by Hopkins? care to answer that? or are you telling me that a Pavlik who had just had the beating of his life, and claimed that Middleweight was his weight so was going to stick there, was better than fighting Roy? Pavlik shut up about Joe after he lost to Hopkins. he would never have gone up in weight to fight him. so how was this supposedly going to happen? atsch so what, Jones didn't have a belt?? what does that have to do with it? it either sells, or it doesn't. belts are just plastic tokens anyway. the Ring is the only title that matters. the championship, not the baubles. Evans Ashira was a warm up and nothing else before the Lacy fight. he didn't want to go in against Lacy, rusty. i don't give a **** when the big fights happened in their careers. they were still from the same era. you do know what "era" means don't you? by the looks of it... you don't. atsch
yeah, Joe IS a better fighter than Marvin. Marvin was great, but he nearly lost to a way past prime Duran who used to be a ****ing Lightweight. he lost to Leonard who had been out of the ring for years and was a natural Welter. Marvin beat some good and very good fighters, but lets not go over board here. if you'd like to point out this oh so great resume of his, then i'm willing to read. i'm actually watching Marvin's career at the moment. i've been spending what feels to be a life time putting my fight collection from video to dvd. i'm nearly finished (thank God) so i'm getting back into the habit of just watching fights instead of watching for editing purposes. so i know what i'm talking about when it comes to the two fighters. :deal he showed his true standing by getting floored by Hopkins and Jones? do you know how ******ed that sounds? are you some little BOY or something just chatting crap on a forum? because from where i'm sitting, it sure looks like it. does Jones getting flattened by Tarver and Johnson show his true standing? :think does Hopkins getting floored by Mercado show his true standing you petulant little boy? you Yanks will do anything to discredit someone won't you? even though it makes you look silly on a regular basis.:deal Joe beat Hopkins so you're just going to have to deal with it. it was no robbery you fool. Joe didn't stop Roy because he never put any power into his shots due to him having brittle hands. this is common knowledge to those with a brain, so i'm not surprised it's a struggle for you. Joe IS an ATG. you may continue.
GENIUS POST!! :happy oh, and that's twice now that i've taken your incompetent posts and wiped my arse with them. your delusion is immense. i know more in my little finger than you will ever know. that is why you look stupid in your posts. :deal
