    true.
but truthfully, even if their careers stopped now, it's hard not to give credit to pavlik over calzaghe for the choices he's made so far.

he's 'in danger' of becoming the new gatti - because people respect him, the way he fights, and beating taylor twice is a very significant accomplishment.

i'm neither britsh nor a yank by the way. no affiliations.

would you give up your job of $3 million a year /move to another country and go onto a wage of $300k a year ?

thats what calzaghe would have had to have done in your scenario in the hope of landing a $3 million fight with hopkins or jones.

Yeah, but theres a good chance that the fight may take place in the UK and to the average UK fan Pavlik is unheard of. A good majority of my firends dont even know who RJJ is tbh. Just look at the hype surrounding Hatton here and you can hopefully understand the average UK boxing fan a lil, its just the British 'us & our own' mentallity.

He's correct about the US. Abroad may be a different story, but in America, Jones is still a boxing icon, no matter how faded, and pulls in viewers. The victory over Trinidad probably even strengthened that drawing power. Calzaghe is unknown by the average sports fan here, as is Pavlik, though that is changing, albeit, slowly.

Get the heck outta here. Your talking about 2 UNDEFEATED fighters here. Well, 1 fighter & 1 slapper. :yep Like people are gonna pay top PPV $$$ to watch a slapper vs another old man. Fans from around the world will be going nuts to see if this Killer Pavlik can do what he should be able to do against this slickster.

    End of dicussion.

we're not talking money, we're talking respect.

it's because he stuck with the money (which he didn't need anyway) that he lost the international respect and the chance to be lauded on the world stage.

damn! most fighters don't have the luxury to have the financial backing behind them before they 'choose' whether or not they want to test themselves against the best.

calzaghe's position was a luxury one and he chose the money. it wasn't the 'sacrifice' the make it out to be - he just chose to milk his countrymen instead of find out how good he was.

excellent fighter mind you, but when people debate the difference between pavlik's career to JC's then this is it.

pavlik wanted to find out how good he was. joe didn't.

Honestly, you are deluded. De La Hoya is an old man. Trinidad is an old inactive man. These guy do numbers, not because the hardcore love them, but because to the casual fan they are big names

A lot of what you are saying is subjective. These people don't see a "slapper" or a "killer". They see Roy Jones, a big famous name against some Welsh guy. Even a black guy vs a white guy

It isn't guys on ESB that decide PPV numbers.

Yep. I'm not saying its right, I wish the real fights did the numbers. They just don't.

Big names do numbers. Don't matter how good they are, how old they are or anything else. Mike Tyson would do bigger numbers than anything Pavlik does. It's just boxing :-(

To be fair I remember that myself, it was in the newspapers (doesnt make it true though)

Perhaps that's the reason Joe doesnt want a Pavlik fight now, because he was turned down in the past. Bit childish but there you go :huh

The US has about enough 'real boxing fans' to fill one small arena. The sport gets no coverage or exposure here. Even ESPN barely shows fight results in its 'ticker' at the bottom of the screen. Calzaghe-Hopkins, Mayweather-DLH, Mayweather-Hatton, Jones-Trinidad: those are the only fight results I've ever seen. In the US there are one or two fights a year that ordinary sports fans even know about, if that. It sucks.

The truth of it is Calzaghe is at the end of his career, while Pavlik is just getting in the prime of his career. When all is said and done, Pavlik will have a better resume. Pavlik is only 26 years old, he's only been pro for 8 years. Compare Calzaghe's competition his 8th year, no comparison. Records were very similar: Calzaghe was 32 - 0 (27 KO's), but his opposition was much less at that point in his career. He's only recently stepped it up.
