I remember during this time when joe was WBO champ (should really have been wbo/wba/ibf/ring imo but oh well) he'd just beaten byron mitchell in 2 rounds. For some reason, his opponents over the next 3 years were really ****. I'm wondering if those who have researched joe's career in more detail and hence are well versed in the choices made during this time, could shed some light? I don't ever remember it being said that kessler was better than joe, but looking at the records during this time, kessler beat far better people but to me he was still seen as quite obscure back then. Any help on why he fought crappy opponents during this 33 month spell?
Fwank. He could draw large crowds, and big TV figures; by fighting stiffs. FW did his usual MO and decided not to risk his cash cow. Calzaghe gained more control of his career towards the end.
hand problems & marriage problems mostly. dropped out of fights...had opponents drop out of fights. one of those things i guess.
tate? johnson? both a couple of times iirc. probably a few more... he was also going through a messy divorce where it looked like his misses was gonna take half his future earnings...he wanted to pack it in... there are a lot of stories that he went off the rails big time during that period too...but i won't repeat those. he was just having a shitty time...his heart wasn't in it. no surprise his oppo wasn't great.
His performances in these fights wasn't great neither, meanwhile Kessler was dominating siaca and mundine (both top 5 at the time I believe) It's difficult ranking Calzaghe above Kessler during 04-05 but the ring did and I'm wondering why. I know from my p.o.v back then calzaghe was the clear top and kessler was obscure, but from the ring's p.o.v. kessler was beating rated opponents and joe wasn't, so i'm wondering why they kept him top.
cuz he beat lacy who was #3 and JOe was #1 at the tiome the ring had a policy wher if #1 beat #3 cuz #2 wasn't available he could be Ring champ
Perfect repy, other than the fact it's wrong. He's talking about the period leading up to the Lacy fight. Publicly at least, Joe was making it obvious he was pissed off with the oponents ****** was getting for him and fed up with the big fights not coming. He was boxing down to his oponents level.
Joe Calzaghe was having serious presonal issues during this period. February 2004 - fights his mandatory Mger Mkrtchyan. June/July 2004 - pulls out of the Glen Johnson fight after getting arrested a week before the fight. Mentally he was in no condition to box. The fight is difficult to resechedule and Johnson goes off and fights Roy Jones instead. The rest, as we know, is history. October 2004 - fights Kabary Salem. March 2005 - Calzaghe's fight against Brian Magee in Belfast is called off with two days to go. The WBO were going to strip Calzaghe for fighting 60 days before his mandatory. May 2005 - beats his Mandatory Mario Veit in Germany. September 2005 - fights Evans Ashira as a warm up for Jeff Lacy. Calzaghe injures left hand. November 2005 - the Jeff Lacy fight is postponed due to Calzaghe's broken hand.
Ok so two guys were mandatory fights he had no say over and a fight with johnson fell through. That's fair enough. Was salem a voluntary fight then? Was he ranked at the time? The fight with lacy getting postponed I remember :good So it's two mandatory fights, a tune up and a lacy fight, i'm cool with that. Just the salem fight i'm unconvinced about now. If that's his one voluntary fight when he was injury free in 3 years, he really should have ensured it was against a ranked opponent.
I have no information on the Salem fight. Shame the Magee fight fell through. This would now be considered a respectible defence in Brian's backyard.
According to Boxrec, that was a very dirty fight where both fighters were deducted a point. Calzaghe was also floored in round 4. Embarassing considering a green Bute made the ''Egyptian Magician'' quit on his tool one year later, his 14th consecutive stoppage victory BTW.
It was an off balance knockdown if you watch the fight. Salem actually killed a man with that infamous head of his :-( He lost to veit just before joe so i've no idea why this fight happened unless he had a ring ranking i'm unaware of.
After further research it appear the mktch guys was ring ranked. Just wondering about veit and salem now.
