The author should have realised that Woodhall was also a strap holder. And people talk about Pudwill like the fight was supposed to be with him. He was a late replacement.
Some overate him and some underate him. The truth is he a very good fighter with a decent resume but most certainly could have faced tougher competition
He was a decent fighter but not great. He should have pushed more for fights with guys like Jones and Hopkins.
I havn't spoke of Calzaghe in a years, but the other day I randomly come across his name on Boxrec so I clicked on it. After looking at his resume I was generally shocked at how terribly **** it is. I knew what his resume was anyway, but for some reason just looking at it a few years later It really hit me how **** it is.
OK, but what about a guy like Ashira? He was a light middleweight who's one and only fight at super middle was a world title shot against Calzaghe. If that is not cherry picking a easy opponent then I don't know what is. Plus people look at the end of Calzaghe's career and over look the darker days when Calzaghe was heavily criticised for his choice of opponents and viewing figures for his fights were so low that Sky refused to renew their contract with Frank Warren. The win over Eubank in 97 was a good win for a green Calzaghe and should have been a stepping stone onto to bigger and better things, but instead nothing much of note really happened for the next 9 years.
I agree. He seemed to be a guy who really took pride in his "0". And it affected his choice(or Warren's) of opponent.
His resume could've been a lot better, but he had the style to always have been competitive against anyone imo
The Ashira fight happened as a tune-up for Jeff Lacy after Calzaghe shattered his hands again. Calzaghe was supposed to fight Jeff Lacy first, then broke his hands. Then when it healed, he took Ashira as a tune up. THAT is where the rumors that Calzaghe was ducking Lacy came from. Good thing Calzaghe shut everybody up soon after. Tocker Pudwill was a late replacement for Thomas Tate.
good fighter but his resume is a disgrace. lacy and kessler had no signature wins before they fought joe. tell me when either one of those guys gets in the hall. bhop was 43 years old when they fought. let me say that again, bhop was 43 when they fought. and then in his last fight he defeated the 1990's fighter of the decade, roy jones, in december of 2008. joe's a good fighter but i think it's a shame that he's probably going into the hall of fame. the hall is for great fighters, not good.
Problem with calzaghe is people either like him or dislike him and its THAT , that decides their views on his status imo. A lot of double standards can be seen from posters both defending him and attacking him. Look at how many say Kessler is an overhyped win and was never anything special, yet on different threads they herald Ward as p4p or near p4p for beating the same overhyped fighter. Same for how some blast people like ward for fighting at home yet defend calzaghe, and vice versa ofc. Mnay many many will deny it but IMO a lot of people nowadays are falling into the race/nationality bias wars and its a sad thing to see
Calzaghe has a **** resume! He could have been so much more than he is because he was talented!! His skills arent in question! People know he was a great fighter but never faced great opposition as much as he should have!! This is the view of most people of Calzaghe! He is not overrated!! He is not underrated!! ...he is what he is!!! :deal
