against hopkins he told uk press he didn't do much sparring and it maybe contributed in him being a little rusty in the first round. i must admit joe made enzo look better then he really is. can u imagine if calzaghe had roach, mayweather he would of done anything different?
He did spar. But very rarely. And with sub standard partners. So essentially, he never sparred properly at all in his career.
when calzaghe wants an omlatte he breaks open a chicken. also he doesnt wear a watch...HE decides what time it is
I remember them saying on some of his bio for HBO that he rarely did sparring as Enzo felt that it "adds milage"...which is probably correct to an extent.
Calzaghe himself around the Hopkins fight said that he had lost the will to train hard, so perhaps he stopped sparring as frequently towards the end of his career. Perhaps stopped sparring at all.
It's a British phrase. Ehen Enzo said he had never sparred what he actually meant was that he sparred very little. Calzaghe always did a reasonable, but not huge amount, of sparring in the run up to his fights but never saw the benefit of having wars in the gym.
To take the place of sparring Enzo used to play some avante guard Jazz, ala something on the Cecil Taylor tip. And he'd tell Joe, "Now go into the ring and freestyle." And Joe would be all arrhythmic, arms flailing and not realizing he looked like a tool.
If you're a great fighter, sparring is overrated. I wouldn't be surprised if Mayweather rarely sparred too, despite what he says. If you got it, you got it. Some people just don't have it. Take most people for instance, they might spar all the time, and still look like ****, but you got a guy who doesn't, but isn't hindered by his nerves and is in great shape, and sparring isn't as necessary.... There are other excercises used to work on speed and timing....
