RJJ unified all the belts and became the lineal champion at Light Heavyweight, he pretty much gave people a lesson on how to clean out a division. Joe Calzaghe is also a paper champion at Super Middleweight, the WBO title he held for a decade fighting all sorts of bums was as paper as it gets.

I always considered Jones the man at LHW despite DM's lineal claim. Roy collected all the belts that DM was stripped of for whatever reason.. Not only was Jones known as the man at LHW but was widely considered the best in any weight class. I think fault can be put on both for not fighting, but I do put a bit more on DM for that reason.

As for Joe being a paper champ... I have always felt a new line was formed when DM lost to Gonzalez.. Making Joe the man at LHW.

Erdei became the man after beating Gonzalez.

Personally I think the whole linear championship concept is overrated. It's a nice concept, but it simply doesnt work very well in practice. For example: past prime Foreman, Erdei, shot Ali , M.Spinks, B.Douglas, Rahman etc

 

I think this is a case where the lineal champion isn't the man at the weight class. I considered Roy Jones the man at LHW, even though technically DM was the lineal Champ.

As soon as DM was beat by Gonzalez, I felt that title was not as legit as the one Roy Jones was holding. I certainly didn't take it as serious.
