He got a lot of credit at the tail end of his career, specifically when he beat an undefeated Kessler and when he beat Hopkins. I gave him full credit for those 2 wins and at that point he was widely considered a top 10 P4P fighter.

Fischer knows first hand that the reason he's not thought of as an ATG is because he was sequestered in Europe for way too long. He needed to come to the states much earlier and take on the top tier guys. A good majority of his resume was against fluff fighters, so it's not because of his color, it's because his level of competition didn't really pick up until close to the very end of his career. He closed his career out in good fashion, I'll give him that.

The European level fighters are just as good if not better than the domestic American fighters that HBO like to harp on about (your modern day Devon Alexander level fighters are of the same quality of your Leonard Bundu's, Jo Jo Dan's your Adrien Broner's or Jurgen Brahmer's your level of Chad Dawson's) but aren't given the same opportunities on TV so they get classed as 'fluff' but to knowledgeable boxing observers are not.

Calzaghe is one of my favourite fighters ever. H2H he is a nightmare for most fighters; southpaw, skilled, awkward, good punch resistance, quick hands and feet and a terrific work rate. However, his resume, for various reasons, some his fault others the fault of potential opponents, is not as extensive as it could have been.

It is hard to truly judge Calzaghe's standing in boxing because of this. The best thing you can say about him is H2H he gives anyone from MW to LHW a fight. Unfortunately you can also say that we will never know how truly great he could have been because certain fights never came of. Still, he is justifiably a HOF'er and a great. It's a pity that we just don't know exactly how great he was.

Hopkins humiliated himself saying he'd never lose to a white boy. Not only was it racist...he lost. Was funny watching the banter with Enzo though.

the same can be said for that entire smw generation. too many transatlantic fights that should've been made weren't.

    I can't argue with that.

The MW/SMW division of the 90's and 00's had some amazing fighters, in America and Britain particularly, that just didn't get it on.

So many great fighters and not enough great fights. It really did encapsulate the good and bad of boxing.
