joe calls out jones and Hopkins, and then fights subnational weaklings.. mygerchagn(?), McIntyre (???), post-ottke pudwill, ferrera(??????), jiminez, Thornberry(*$£!*&%!), sobot, sheika, starie, salem..... 4-8 rounder weakling VEIT.... TWICE !!

his best opponent before Kessler (ie last fight) was past it Byron Mitchell, loser of nabf fight, nearly killed Joe before welsh ref saved joe by stopping it when Mitchell slipped.

his 2nd best opponent Woodhall was retiring with a back injury and was happy to accept an extra payday towards it when he was nowhere near world class.

fair play he did fight oneworld class guy post prime robin reid, who arguably beat him and joe ran from rematch in fear.
HAHAHAHAHAHA you think joe was chasing roy jones quality when he took 10 years to face world class in Kessler???10 years?? did he like the scenic route that bad???

OMG, anyone that thinks Joe had a chance against prime Jones is absolutely insane. I saw a ton of prime Jones fights and I don't even remember him being spoke of nor knew who Calazhage was even back then. Only guy like that who was mentioned was Darius, Joe was never in the picture during jones' prime.

This Calzaghe, Michalczewki, Eubank, Benn wanting to fight prome RJJ is getting ridiculous. None of them or anybody else for that matter (Hopkins and Toney) wanted to fight RJJ because not only was that a guaranteed loss but also a loss in embarrasing fashion. Prime Roy was on another level. Toney who was the closest in talent to him was embarrased for 12 rounds.

Calzaghe wanted to fight subdomestics and pretend they were world title defences.

First off I'm a big Joe fan.

Secondly, the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight was awful. Calzaghe had no answers for Hopkins ring craft and tricks, Hopkins couldn't handle Joe's punch output so spolied. Resulted in a terrible fight that I will never watch again.

Thirdly, Calzaghes resume is far too weak to be considered an ATG. Hopkins has a far stronger resume and still winning titles at his age is some feat.

I think we all agree Joe was one hell of a fighter. He had the potential for be an ATG but for whatever reason he didn't face the best of his era when they should have happened. And Joe's division when he was at his best was very weak with the exception of Mikkel Kessler and didn't contain the calibre of fighters needed to cement his legacy.

I think Eubanks experience made up for it, yeah. Many boxers don't research their opponents at all, they just go in there and focus on their boxing.

What mattered was that Eubank was at the end of a grueling career. Still, he was only 31 so even that argument is a bit weak.
But the result of preparation and circumstances is mostly speculation. You and I don't know in depth how much such things affect a boxers performence.

I judge from Eubanks performence inside the ring. He seemed to be okay, so I assume he was not badly affected by anything. If a boxer is, you can in many cases tell. Roy Jones had serious mental issues while fighting Calzaghe, Sergio Martinez was a walking corpse when he got into the ring with Miguel Cotto and so on.

If a fighter looks fine, why believe this or that issue held him back?

But boxers are rarely honest about such things, and you and I can't tell how much difference it makes. Save obvious cases it's just guessing.

What are you on about? :huh Fruit is healthy. Lots of C-vitamins and stuff.

You are only trying to discredit the all time great Sir Joe Calzaghe. Don't expect me to buy into it

Your "Eubank ate fruit"-argument is a dead end. You seriously need to look for another angle :patsch

It was a good scrap between a talented up and coming Calzaghe and a past prime but still game hall of famer Eubank. I can assure you it was appreciated by many boxing fans and still is. It was one of the more exciting fights Calzaghe was part of.

I don't think Calzaghe has any great wins.

A fare assessment. I think prime Jones stops Calzaghe, but with boxing you never know, if Joe had made the fight happen maybe he could have proved me wrong and become an all time great.

But as always with Calzaghe it's coulda, woulda, shoulda - didn't.
