Joe Calzaghe shall be missed by all of us, once he retires

Whether rightly or wrongly, Joe Calzaghe has been criticised for his resume, for his fighting style, for his career choices and for his personality and character. As a subject of discussion, he has been a constant presence here on ESB, with a large proportion of threads referring to him either directly or indirectly. After he retires, the threads and criticism, whether fair or unfair, will continue, but we will no longer have the pleasure of enjoying the sight of one of the best fighters of his generation ever again, except on film.

Whether he fought the best or not, Joe Calzaghe gave his all in every fight he has ever fought, whether against a fighter like Bika or against a fighter like Mikkel Kessler. Whether he punched or slapped, he has always come to fight, he has never backed down and he has never stunk up the joint. The atmosphere at his bigger fights in Britain has been one of the best anywhere in the world.

Whatever you think of him as a man, he had the guts to step into the same ring as Mikkel Kessler aged 35, and to give his best ever performance, when he could have made very good money fighting the likes of Froch or Bute at much less risk. He then had the guts to travel to the United States, aged 36, to fight one of the best fighters of his generation, Bernard Hopkins.

Even when things were not going well for him, he gave his all and fought until the bitter end. And who will ever forget his performance against Jeff Lacy?

Now, he is preparing to take on another legendary fighter, aged almost 37. His last two fights were his hardest. His last could be one of his hardest too. I very much look forward to it and know that at the final bell, when Calzaghe will take his last farewell-applause from the tens of thousands in attendance, I shall start missing him already. Allow me to presume that so will you, whether you can bring yourselves to admit it or not.

So why not join me in concentrating on enjoying the next two weeks before his last ever fight and saying: "Thank you for the excitment and the memories, Joe Calzaghe, and good luck in your last fight against the great Roy Jones Jr!"?

Like all other greats, he will definitely be missed and the haters will, as usual, feel sorry for all the hate and insults.

I think in 20 years time there will still be people on ESB starting anti-Calzaghe threads to be honest!

I agree, but you forgot one thing...

We don't watch fighters that slap. Fragile hands or not.

Calzaghe is a true legend. All the doubters can **** off with him fighting Pavlik ****, after Kelly lost to Hopkins there is no logic for a fight. A rematch with Hopkins is even less likely because Joe beat Hopkins quite comfortably, what ever Hopkins and the anti-Calzaghe camp say, it was as clear as day. I had him about 4 or 5 points ahead if I'm not mistaken.
If Calzaghe beats Jones then retires I hope every doubter will finally wake up and eat some humble pie.

And he'll still be accused of ducking the American hypejob of the day.

Only difference will be that, by then, the USA will be a spanish speaking country and we'll all have to learn a new language to carry on winding them up :good

Hell yes. The insults on Lewis when he was active were insane, even when he announced his retirement people bashed the living hell out of him, I admit I was one of them because I wanted the Klitschko fight. Now that years passed you can slowly see people appreciate him and cry out for someone like him to come.
