Of course he could have beaten Toney or Hopkins back then, it's not definite but certainly not beyond reason.....and as for Eubank he was never the same after the Michael Watson tragedy........but he was good, very good. Watch Benn-Eubank I and tell me "he wasn't that good"

Plus its not normal for fighters to be awesome in their 30s....Hopkins is very much a freak of nature in that sense and Calzaghe beating him was a good win on foreign soil in a new weight class....no??

Hopkins is definitely a freak of nature....but c'mon man, you can't honestly think a prime RJJ, James Toney or even a 30 something version of Hopkins wouldn't have beaten Calzaghe. I honestly feel that Calzaghe's career benefitted from him fighting in a relatively weak era. The funny thing is, SMW is really heating up now that he moved to 175. Again, he's a damn good fighter...probably the best ever out of the uK but his best wins came against guys who were past their primes. Its that simple. Kessler and Lacy were great wins and American fans don't give him enough respect for that but can you really rate those two guys as HOF talent? No!!! Maybe Kessler will go on to be a dominant champion at 168 and clean out the div. but I highly doubt it.

The Hopkins that was beaten by Jones could have lost to Calzaghe, as could the Hopkins that beat Howard Eastman......

Toney and Calzaghe would beat each other 3 times each if they fought six fights, and I've never said prime Jones would lose to Calzaghe

You say his best wins were against guys out of their prime, yet you say his best wins were against younger guys that he bet when calzaghe himself was out of his prime.....so it evens itself out doesnt it???

You ever been to see the deadly beast that is Mikkel Kessler fight over in Denmark?? that's kinda/sorta your neck of the woods???

Once big Joe retires there's only really the Viking Warrior left for me to support

Unless Naz makes a comeback as a meatball

I never said Lacy and Kessler were his best wins, and the reason I never said that is because those guys are not HOF fighters...however they were the guys that the boxing world demanded Calzaghe fight at the time and he did and beat 'em...so I have to respect JC for that. Also, the Hopkins that fought Jones was not a prime Hopkins IMO. Hopkins didn't really reach his prime until he was in his 30's...but I would still pick that version of hopkins to beat Calzaghe. Calzghe is no RJJ in terms of speed, reflexes, power or overall talent.

Well, its probably closer to your woods than mine if you're in the UK :good

I havn't seen him fight even when I was in Denmark. I'll have to time it right some time, but I guess he'll be in America from now.

I would have gone to the Cal-Kess fight but I feared that big Joe would lose and refused to pay money to see it

And yes, my geography leaves a lot to be desired but the Scandinavian link made me type before i thought

    Moronic comments by Joe C.

RJJ would have destroyed him prime for prime.

    Roy ducked him? :rofl :rofl

The only reason this fight is on now because ONCE AGAIN Roy goes for it but this time Calzaghe accepts and TRAVELS for it like he did for Hopkins, WHY?!, because both are BEYOND shot, that's why. If Roy was 1% of what he once was the "I won't leave Wales, sorry" will pop up and he'll sign to fight another can yet again.

This guy is really easy to hate.

RJJ would have wiped the FLOOR with him in his prime, in one-sided brutal fashion. TKO6 is my pick and in the most embarrassing way possible. There's a reason Joe stayed in his cave over there in Wales and is only traveling for the "big fights" now, it's the fact that everyone is BEYOND shot and he wants to pad his record the easiest way possible.

There is absolute NO REASON AT ALL for RJJ to duck Calzaghe back in his younger days, he would have made Calzaghe look like the many tomato cans he was fed on in Wales in his 20+ defenses, that's why he did nothing to make it happen. If it wasn't for Lacy and Kessler flying to fight this guy he would still be feeding on tomato cans.
