An elite boxer would have laid ALOT more leather on Hopkins.

calzaghe is great but not amongst the all time great's.

the thing that stands joe apart from the rest is his versatility. joe is one of a handfull of fighters who can adjust his style to find an answer to difficult oponents, whether that is going backwards or going forwards.

the thing that saddens me most is that he is having to prove his critics wrong now, when he is past his sell by date. if joe was 6 or 7 years younger he could of answered every question out there.

You want a lot more than the most ever landed on Hopkins?

Cue lecture on how the punch stats are completely incorrect and what you saw and calculated in your brain whilst watching is infact 100% accurate :-(

    What a joke.

I thought there would be more "really objective" people voting "bum" to be honest, given the sheer level of hatred some have for Joe.

Nice to see most who have voted so far say elite. I haven't voted yet but I'm inclined to agree.

yeah right, because Hopkins is so weak defensively and easy to hit :-(

Very Good. Would climb into Great territory if he beats Hopkins decisively in a rematch, or beats Dawson. Sorry, but 3 wins (and Lacy has since proved to be very limited) does not equate to GREATNESS. His resume isn't good enough to be called truly great.

To say he is 'elite' (ie, higher than great) is ****ing insane.

The 7 untouchable 'elite' boxers of history are:

ROBINSON, GREB, LANGFORD, ARMSTRONG, ALI, CHARLES, DURAN.

Guys like Pep, Fitzsimmons, Louis etc could also be called 'elite' depending on your personal preferences.

The level below is GREATNESS (Leonard, Monzon, Whitaker, Jones Jr etc).

Joe Calzaghe cannot be considered on these levels.

    This forum is a nuthouse.

    Elite. An atg no doubt.
Slow start to his career but he cranked it up late and has fought a very high level of opposition recently.
Dosen't always look pretty but has always got the job done.

On this site any one who praises Joe often gets ridiculed and I'm not entirely sure why.
Cant be the opposition as thats improoved heavily in recent years.
His personality isn't exactly charasmatic but you could say that for a number of fighters.
Might be an american bias towards euros but that would be a bit of a crude generalisation on my part.

Possibly because in the past he's had some rabid fans (you KNOW who you are! ) and thats pissed people off.

I think your definition of elite is a lot stricter than mine. I just think of it as atg. This often the reason posters get into silly arguments when they often have simular opinions.
