yeah...it's aggregated...i know how they work. but what other fights was vinny paz getting ranked for at 168? going by ring rankings peter manfredo was one of joe's best opponents btw...i consider him one of the worst defences. doesn't mean a whole lot.

i only brought it up because someone said "bernard hopkins was the number 1 middleweight in the world going into the rjj fight". they disprove that quite nicely.

    Fair enough.

Agreed about Manfredo. It was a poor defense, particularly for a unified champ. It was definitely a step back at that point in time.(although I sort of understand them trying to cater to the US market with the fight). I guess I'd consider it middle of the pack.

For some reason they loved Paz. I remembered his high ranking being down to blowing out Rosenblatt, who was heavily hyped at the time. Double checking though, it seems he was ranked highly well before that. Inexplicable really. Perhaps they gave him some extra kudos for his miracle recovery from his car accident?

One of the common themes of the early/mid 90s Ring & KO rankings was that the WBO title was not recognised as a legitimate "world" belt. WBO champs weren't acknowledged as such in the rankings, and typically the first 3 spots would automatically go to the WBA/WBC/IBF boys.

he was ring number 6 or so right? iirc that was what they announced him as.

i honestly don't think i saw a guy in a title fight with calzaghe who looked more ill-equipped to cope than him. there were plenty of guys who weren't ring top ten ranked at 168 who were clearly better fighters & gave calzaghe more trouble.

i'm not saying there is an outrageous bias or insinuating corruption...but there is bound to be favouring of the fighters who are right on your doorstep & known by your primary market. the more popular & credible the us based fighters are the better it is for them too. if manfredo was based in germany with the exact same record he wouldn't be ring number 6 when calzaghe fights him. but whatever, it is what it is.

I don't disagree with any of that. Not sure about Manfredo's ranking at the time. The annuals that you posted have him at 10 though.

I thought the stoppage was truly, truly atrocious, but I do agree that he was not going to win that fight.

altho the stoppage was bad; it was like watching a man sparring with a kid. i almost don't blame the ref for taking the first excuse he had to step in.

Too bad Calzaghe didn't accomplish much at SMW, like beat any HoF fghters (Kessler could "possibly" be one, he is good no matter what), or even really noteworthy, mostly glass jawed domestic brits. Toney has a better resume at SMW, to be honest and RJJ. The only reason Calzaghe would be considered the best SMW of all time his is long title reign of a worthless WBO belt. But if we are going by title reign, then I guess he get's it and we might as well give B-hop greatest MW and RJJ greatest LHW... but we wouldn't do that, would we?

Just a note Des, where you said Froch should go above Kessler due to inactivity etc...

Kessler beat Froch, and should be above
Froch beats Abraham and goes instantly above, which I said I felt was done on purpose to create a Ring champ. Note Abraham was coming off a loss and Froch had just lost to Kessler but Froch was put above.

Then Froch and Kessler both fought on the same night. Froch against Johnson, Kessler against Bouadla with Froch scoring a MDec and Kessler a stoppage. Now Frochs win is was the greater in my opinion and I have no problem with Froch going above Kessler at that point.

Now Froch lost to Ward, The Ring have put Froch below Kessler.

So at this time what do you feel Kessler has done to go above Froch. I know you were happy with Froch to go above Kessler for beating Abraham coming off a loss
