I have discussed this fight before in the genral boxing forum

but I would like to expose it to the Brit forum for debate

of course the fight will never happen

just wonder what do you think would happen

this is not a pound for pound fantasy match up

or a prime for prime match up

    I'm talking about right NOW

If Enzo Maccarenelli boiled his weight down a bit - (like he said he could do)

And Joe Calzaghe bulked up a bit (just a few pounds)

at a catch weight between cruiserweight and light heavyweight - say around 185LBs limit - who would win and how?

I woudn't fancy Calzaghes chances of overcoming the size difference at this stage of this stage if his career, I'm not sure he could sustain a workrate to make Enzo uncomfortable and to get inside. Enzo by late stoppage.

I think Enzo's power would be too much

but having debated this before there were many who would say Calzaghe would win well

I just think the phyiscal difference would be to much

Matching Calzaghe against any cruiserweight I'd normally say he'd get KO'd as he's too small but Maccarinelli is so god damn awful Calzaghe would probably end up winning.

I don't think Calzaghe would have to get inside necessarily. Establishing a jab isn't all about reach and size, though it helps. Enzo towers over him, but the reaches aren't far apart so Calzaghe could jab to his manboobs. Speed and footwork come into it, as well as know how. Nobody has ever outjabbed Calzaghe, or had relative success with a jab against Calzaghe. Infact, to use a very crude example, Veit who is freakishly tall was no stylistic problem.

I think an orthodox fighter that tries to box a stand up style like Enzo will always have trouble, especially if you are slow in comparison.

Always the chance Enzo times him with a right hand and its fight over, but I've always felt his power is overrated somewhat, and I'd back Calzaghe to be able to take infrequent shots if they are not perfectly clean and timed to take a decision.

I think Calzaghe's speed would be a lot for Enzo to handle. I reckon Cal would outbox Enzo for a points win.
