Joe Calzaghe -V- Marvin Hagler : Prime For Prime

Still not seen Reid-Calzaghe since the original airing.

 

Ive seen it twice,both are fouling and only Rob gets told off for it.It happens over and over.Its like the ref hates him,must admit its a good while since I watched it.I had money on Reid and had already lost £30 on other bets that day so it was probably not as bad as Im making out,I was ****ing fuming when he docked Rob a point.

 

come on lads own up, who said Calzaghe KO?

 

Id want at least 100/1 at the bookies for that result.Id say 40/1 on him winning on points.He would not have a prayer.

When was Calzaghe's prime??? A lot of people slating Maxwel for saying it was around the Kessler fight, but he could be right.

Performance wise, it was as good as he's fought. Lacy, he was flawless but the fact people see Lacy as completely useless, how can that be considered his best.

 

I think people were more slating the idea that Hagler's prime was against Ray, and the fact that he's meant to be at his prime in this matchup despite it being at Super-middleweight.

 

I think that Calazaghe was in his prime against Tucker Pudwill...

There are 3 fights that stand out for me where he was in his prime...:yep

1. v Byron Mitchell where he tasted the canvas for the first time and I feel that was the start of some positive exposure for him, although a premature stoppage in my view from the ref, it was always on the cards...:yep

2. v Kessler was the night he proved he could fight to a plan and adapt when it was not working, the second half of the Kessler fight showed the fighting skills and boxing brain of Joe Calzaghe on a World stage...:yep

3. v Jeff Lacy. Joe Calzaghe pulled it all together with boxing skills and fitness to outwit, outthink and outbox the man who had intimidated and bulldozed his way past everyone...:yep Joe Calzaghe gave him 1006 reasons not to want to fight him again...:bbb

I see Hagler coming forward all night long and Calzaghe having every opportunity needed to get the points in the bag to beat him...:yep Styles make fights and this is no exception...:good

 

The Mitchel fight was exciting, VERY exciting but I think it was a poor performance. When you think of vintage JC, its not him throwing windmill bombs like he did then.

 

I think that fight showed a lot of Calzaghe's intangibles though. Mitchell almost took his head off and Joe got straight up and went after him like he stole something from his mother.

 

Whenever there are fantasy match-ups involving Calzaghe, you always end up with a lot of "styles make fights..." thrown in. And that's because in a lot of people's eyes, Calzaghe's 100-slaps-a-round style, beats all other styles.

 

Yeah, it was impressive but if im honest, he got lucky with the punch that initially put Mitchell down, he could've been caught himself.

Nothing 'lucky' about it IMO. When a man just almost got his head taken off and then he ends up not only recuperating so quickly, but is the one stalking his opponent then he gets full credit. It really shows what was inside of Calzaghe. The harder you stepped to him the harder he fought, that's not something everyone can do.

 

Im not trying to discredit the win, my point was, it wasnt a measured shot that put Mitchel down, it was more desperation and JC could've just as easily been caught.
Mitchell was hunting him down and looked very dangerous.

After the Mitchell KD, Calzaghe was a different class.

 

Did he really 'get his head taken off'? I've never seen a good angle of the kd? Mitchell is hardly a massive banger either.
