A lot of people don't like him because of his showboating - especially when he did it against RJJ.

How dare he showboat against the master showboater? He did even fill in the application and get prior approval from RJJ.

Jones kind of deserved it, what goes around comes around. The only problem I had with it is that little shimmy Calzaghe did just looked stupid.

I kind of liked the "stick my head in front of him and make him miss" stuff he did though.

The guy won every fight he was ever in. I mean that alone should silence a lot of Joe's critics. 46-0 is as sparkling a record as one could ever hope to achieve. The guy's a first-ballot HOFer as far as I'm concerned and one of the best British fighters of all-time. Nobody will convince me otherwise.

instead of starting a thread selecting quotes from what you want to hear, why dont you tackle objective posters head on if you believe calzaghe is everything you think he is?

if you cant do that, you dont really believe what you're saying anyway and you're looking for a way to 'win' a thread without putting yourself on the line.

like anything in life, you got to put yourself on the line or else it doesnt count.

so if kessler opted not to fight calzaghe, stay and fight in copenhagen against lesser opponents, would he be a fighter you would hold in higher regard because of his record?

a fighter should be judged on who he fought and when. the organisations **** things up royally - honestly - dont ever use a fighters record or belts as a defense in this day and age.

who he fought and when is all that matters.

I have come to regard Calzaghe highly for the way he finished his career. The fact that 3 of those 46 wins involved cleaning out his division and beating a living legend is what put him over the top in my opinion. Furthermore, in light of recent events (Hopkins shutting out Pavlik and Bika proving to be no cupcake) I give Calzaghe even more credit for what he accomplished at the end. I know the record is only as good as the names that help comprise it and that's why I give Calzaghe is due. Aside from the guys I've mentioned there were also some other solid wins for Joe. Eubank (old or not), Reid, Brewer, and Veit were all world-class fighters. I know I'll get flak for bringing up Brewer and Veit but hey, that's just me.

Circumstances also make resumes stronger. Unfortunately, most are unaware of said circumstances with this individual.

have you considered that calzaghe could have fought jones and hopkins in their prime and was truly one of only a few fighters around that weight who could have made it interesting?

    1. Being heavily knocked down against a big puncher and being hurt. Getting up to stop the puncher within 60 seconds of being on his arse himself.

The kind of fight that could have seen most people blown away. It takes balls and heart to stand toe to toe with somebody with power who has put you on your arse for the first time in your life regardless of who they are.

This adds to a legacy as far as I'm concerned. I could list lots but I am at the end of my lunch break in work.

I have difficulty giving him the edge against some of the greats with youth on their side. It's with the loss of their reflexes or speed, Calzaghe, with his non-stop workrate, would consistently keep them off balance and unable to set themselves.

    That's just me.
