To me, Carlos was very effective, but quite methodical.

He had significant physical advantages over almost all of his opponents.

He also fought in the era of same day weigh-ins, with no SMW division.

As we know, Joe was a big, fast handed southpaw, who was a volume puncher, where he'd have been a career LHW in Carlos' era.

We also don't know how Carlos would have carried the extra weight.

So how would that not have been a bad stylistic match up for Carlos?

    I don't understand this.

An orthodox, at times methodical 160 MW, who fought back in the era of same day weigh-ns, against a big, fast, volume punching SMW, who'd have been a LHW in the same era??

Why would you believe it wouldn't have been close?

Would you have picked an easy win for Carlos, over a 70's LHW with Joe's attributes?

    A late stoppage?

    Really?

    Based on what?

Joe had a great chin and would have been a LHW in Carlos's era.

Carlos never fought beyond MW, and was a MW back in the days of same day weigh-ins.

What did he do to make you think he could have stopped a LHW with Joe's attributes?

    How's things?

Joe was also renowned for his great stamina.

It was one of his greatest assets.

But we have to ask who this was against though?

Certainly nobody of Joe's size, style and weight.

    Outstanding post.

I think that many people will rate Carlos higher on a P4P basis.

But he simply never proved that he could beat a world level LHW.

That's not to say that he couldn't have.

But it amazes me how people are predicting easy wins, as well as stoppages.

    Both great fighters.

But Carlos would have held no physical advantages over Joe.

No advantages in speed, power or stamina.

I also don't see how the match up would have favoured him stylistically.

It's always a pleasure to read your posts Mike.

    You are a true gentleman.

It's always nice to read different opinions. And again, especially from gentleman and knowledgeable posters such as yourself and John.

However, in a friendly manner, I have to challenge your opinion.

Now I can understand people rating Carlos higher.

    Absolutely.

However, as you know, we have weight classes for a reason, and the better fighter doesn't always win, as the fights are always determined by how the two fighters match up on the night stylistically.

Although Carlos was great, he was a 160 pound MW, back in the day's of same day weigh-ins.

Whereas Joe was a SMW and LHW in the modern era.

What did Carlos do, and who did he beat, for anyone to believe he'd have stopped a modern day SMW/LHW, who proved to have had a great chin??

Carlos would have had no physical advantages over Joe.

Joe would have been a career LHW in Carlos' era.

Did he really possess the power to have stopped Joe?

Would it not have been a bad stylistic match up for him, having fought a big, fast handed, volume punching southpaw, who had great stamina and a great chin, and who was heavier??

Tell me what you've seen, that I've missed.

He might have been a better P4P fighter, but IMHO, he'd have had no physical or stylistical advantages.

Was he really more heavier handed?

A late stoppage, based on what??

Joe had a great chin, and Carlos never fought a guy as big, as heavy and with that style.

So I'd love to know what these opinions are based on.

Joe would have been a LHW in Carlos' era, and we've no idea how Carlos would have done at 168.

    Hi Buddy.
Firstly thanks for your very kind words, the impact of such nice comments from posters such as your good self will never diminish in my world, honestly thank you so much, as to the match up, as always you make good sound sense, and ALL your points are valid and carry weight from a seasoned and much admired member, I know it is difficult for some posters to see and feel what another posters feels, and as I said at the end of my post, the rose tinted glasses may well be on, especially in the case of Monzon, some fighters leave an indelible impression on people, and that is what has happened with him, when appraising opponents especially fantasy, I can only see Monzon winning, there are a few exceptions, Greb, Hagler, and SRR, are the notable standouts, even these illustrious 3 will have their work cut out, it's not about weight, or the stance, or the chin, of Calzaghe, they were fantastic, without doubt, it's just Monzon, the monarch of all he surveyed, and you have missed nothing believe me, your far to astute for that, I just cannot countenance Joe beating Carlos, it doesn't make sense I know, but there it is , your excellent post and detailed analysis wont change my old mind, it should, but it wont.
Always good to cross verbal swords with you Loudon, and I know , as you know, it will always be in a friendly manner.
    stay safe buddy, chat soon.
    Mike.

Your use of the word "apparently" suggests you have a source. Would you mind if I asked what it is?

In his autobiography, Calzaghe said that unusually for him, he was exhausted from the 3rd round onwards vs Eubank. He attributed this to nervous energy meaning he weighed only 12st 4lbs (172lbs) on fight night, commenting that he usually weighed between 12st 10lbs (178lbs) and 12st 12lbs (180lbs).

Brusa claimed Monzon weighed 168lbs by the time he was about to head to the ring.

In his autobiography, Calzaghe claimed he was usually between 178lbs and 180lbs on fight night for his SMW bouts.

I think your 10-15lbs fight night discrepancy is a fair estimate. That discrepancy would have likely been marginally lower if they weighed in at the same time, relative to their fights.
