Everyone in the late 90s around the gyms felt Francis would do him. He was a real talent.

Didn't Calzaghe literally beat Francis and some other future Brit pro whos name escapes me on the same night easily in the AMs?

Francis was about 17 at the time (Calzaghe well into his 20s) and improved drastically as he matured into a grown man. David Starie beat him in the 1994 ABA's and look what happened in the pro's, Francis brushed Starie aside like he was nothing - Calzaghe on the other hand struggled with DS. Plus DF was much more suited to the pro game because he liked to take his time and work his really good stiff jab.

Every shot in the book was thrown effortlessly by Francis, and with speed, accuracy and timing on top of heavy hands. Glenn Catley to this day insists Francis would've done Calzaghe. Catley was smashed to bits in sparring by DF.

Francis in his pomp was a solid operator, but Calzaghe was too good for him.

You've got your figures wrong there as Calzaghe is less than two years older than Francis. So if Francis was 17 then Calzaghe was 18 or 19 :bbb

I am not convinced that you watched the Francis/Starie fight. Yes Francis won in what I seem to recall being the 5th round, but right up to that point Starie was backing Francis up right up until Francis suddenly caught Starie.
Also Calzaghe wasnt that much older than Francis

I really rated Francis years back when he was on the way up as a SMW, but to think he would have beaten Calzaghe is comical.
Francis often seemed to slow and tire as rounds went on. Just look at the struggles Dean had when facing M Baker, which was when he was being hyped the most and then try and convince anyone that he would have beaten Calzaghe. If you watched that fight you would know that beating Calzaghe which is a long shot for any SMW in history would have been very very hard for Francis.
I wonder also if Francis knowing how Calzaghe knocked him clean out would have played on his mind if they were to have fought

Back then I think it would have been by stoppage. Dean would often drop in pace as fights went on

    He did.
Calzaghe not only beat Francis, but beat J Matthews who became a MW world champ, Catley who became a world champ

calzaghe would play with him and knock him out. different levels only a comedian could suggest Francis would even have a chance
