Who would win, prime-vs-prime? Use arguments. No "Calslappy" or whatever people now make fun of James Toney about, just smart arguments.
Toney beats Calzaghe if he turns up in top shape and fully motivated. (He has a good shot at stopping Joe Cal) If he's not either of those two, then he's in serious danger of getting out worked, by a fighter who was almost as smart as he was.
Toney would win decisively. Look at the skills and ability Toney showed in the early 90s, the 1st fight with McCallum is a technical level Calzaghe could never dream of. Calzaghe's high volume/poor defence style would play right into Toney's hands, much like Vassily Jirov did (admittedly Calzaghe is better than Jirov but the best smw Toney was much more mobile, agile, fresher and better than the cw version). I see Calzaghe following Toney and flurrying a lot, landing not much of anything, and eating hard right-hand counters all night. At the end of the fight, Calzaghe would be busted up and would have been dropped more than once, Toney would've got outworked some rounds, but ultimately we'd be looking at something in the 117-109 range on all three cards. People now underestimate Toney because of the fat, flat-footed fighter he became, but on his best nights he was fast, fluid and brilliant, just a much better boxer than Joe. Watch the Barkley fight for just how fast Toney's hands and upper body movement could be at 168. Joe gets outclassed. Prime Toney is no Jeff Lacy or Mikkel Kessler.
Two points come to mind here.. - Calzaghe throws 10000000 punches a fight however Toney could counter punch and roll with punches like the best of them.. - We have seen that Toney could be out worked and we haven't seen many fighters with a work rate like Calzaghe come along.
As contradicting as it may sounds, Toney is the superior and greater fighter but would have lost a wide UD after KD Calzaghe at some point. Joe hits a lot and didn't left his opponents enough room/time to counter.
What's with all the Calzaghe threads? Toney's counter punching and lead right hand would be key However, Toney had a problem with fighters who set a fast pace, and had a high work-rate. Joe wasn't a plodder either, and had good reflexes and agility. Toney could be out-worked, and was beaten by guys like Dave Tiberi and Drake Thadzi right in his prime. Hard fight to call
Hmm... Michael Nunn was a superb boxer, as was Mike McCallum. Reggie Johnson was very good too. :smoke
To be honest, I can`t really call this with any certainty. Toney even at his best will always have trouble with Calzaghe`s speed & workrate, while at the same time Calzaghe will always have trouble with Toney`s sublime punch picking & defense on the inside. Calzaghe`s keys to victory are keep as much distance as possible, use movement, the jab & rapid fire combinations then away again when Toney gets inside. Toney`s keys to victory are to get inside but be patient by making Joe lead first & countering his way in & once inside just do what he does best, slip punches & punish mistakes & score the cleaner, more effective shots. Very fascinating fight that both men would need to be on their `A` game to triumph. Too tough to call for me right now.... I`m 99% sure it goes the distance though. If there is any flash knockdowns then I think they are scored by Toney but there likely wouldn`t be any.
