I thought we were discussing prime for prime, and Hagler was definitely not at his prime when he fought Leonard. Even with that, it is easy to argue Hagler lost good part of this fight outside the ring (by agreeing for 12 rounds instead of 15, by allowing Leonard to choose ring size, gloves, etc.). Calzaghe workrate was not a problem for old Hopkins, who made the fight very competitive and knocked him down in 1st round, being himself 43 y.o. I don't think it would trouble prime Hagler either.
it's important to remember when discussing joe calzaghe in fantasy matchups that apart from the 45 guys he has beaten in his pro career that apart from them he loses to every single pro fighter around his weight classes in the history of the sport.
Hagler fought different styles against different opponents. He could be aggressive and pressure, or box on the backfoot, or circle and box and move laterally. Calzaghe would be a light-heavyweight in Hagler's day under the different weigh-in rules. It's unknown how effective Hagler would be at a higher weight against bigger opponents. If it doesn't bother him too much, then he should beat Calzaghe handily. Hagler was simply a better/greater boxer than Calzaghe.
What is it with Hagler that people are just so ignorant about his style? Why do people watch a couple of fights late in a fighter's career and think that defines how they always fought? It's like when people act that Hopkns was always a guy who threw a punch every 5 minutes.
If Hagler can be as effective at 168 than he normally is at 160 then I go with him by close decision.... if not then I go with Calzaghe by close decision.
I don't know what's up with that, but I do know that the fighter who destroyed Minter, avenged the loss to Bobby Watts and the draw with Anteurmo, knocked out Hamsho and Obelmejias was not the same fighter who fought Tommy Hearns and SRL. Prime Haglar was 78-81, maybe 82. That version of Marvelous Marvin whould show joe what Professional Boxers really do, in spite of the size difference. Haglar by mid rounds TKO.
Hagler by KO. Calzaghe is not Ray Leonard. It does not matter if the 82 or 87 version of Hagler shows up.
