Joe will forever be known as the fighter to beat the great Jeff Lacy. Lacy is a legend and Joe became a legend by beating him. He didn't have any other victories over prime fighters in his career but with a name like Lacy on your record your a hall of famer for sure. Lacy>Hagler.

That's kind of how I see it. The difference in size is inconsequential, but the gulf in skills, class, and especially level of opposition is pretty wide.

Calzaghe's records and accomplishments, while certainly noteworthy and impressive, were done in a weaker era/division and against less than stellar opposition even for that era.

Calzaghe is a unique fighter though, and I don't think would be an easy out ever. His stamina, workrate, bounce back ability and handspeed would allow him to be competitive against a monster like Hagler. But I think he would absorb alot of punishement, and I don't think he sees the end of the fight.

I consider Hagler more of a skilled boxer-puncher, who could adjust and brawl when necessary. Boxing was first and foremost his style. Very versatile.

Level of opposition. Who were the natural MWs that Hagler beat that were so much more impressive than the natural SMWs Calzaghe beat. I know some of the former LWs and WWs Hagler fought were greats but what natural MWs?

Exactly it is a fantasy match up that people can only speculate on. I am a Hagler fan like I am a Calzaghe fan, but the problem many have is remembering the old timers with rose tinted glasses and forget weaknesses.
Calzaghe could change mid flow if required. Yes Hagler had a great chin but whos to say Hagler would be as effective when fighting a bigger man, something that he wouldnt have been used to.
Calzaghe could take a solid shot and like Hagler was never close to being KOd.
Your right when you say Hagler was technically solid, but Calzaghe had an odd style that wasnt easy to prepare for. Hagler was a come forward fighter and Calzaghe looked better against them than counter punchers.
People only say Hagler was shot against Leonard because a out of retirement Leonard beat him. But it was a close fight. Yes Hagler had dipped but not by so much that people like to make out.
Calzaghe would have done a better job than Leonard.

SRL had footspeed and handspeed and was technically a way better boxer than Calzaghe. He outboxed Hagler by effective running, flurries and counters. Since when did Calzaghe fight off the ropes?

Calzaghe never done this in his career. The best outboxing Calzaghe has ever produced was against Jeff Lacy, who was more outworked than outboxed. Calzaghe held in the clinch smothered Lacy in the opening rounds, once Lacy gassed out and Calzaghe's confidence grew he put the slaps on Lacy.

But this wouldnt be effective on Marvin Hagler, because Hagler knew how to fight from range, he never gassed, and could take punishment. This guy wasnt Jeff Lacy.

Both Calzaghe and Hagler fought better with come forward fighters (Mugabi, Hearns, Kessler, Lacy). And both Calzaghe and Hagler were come forward types, so both their styles complement each other.

Calzaghe got out boxed by Reid and Hopkins, yes he got the W, but he did get outboxed both were SD's. The result here doesnt matter, the way Calzaghe got outboxed does, he was either kept out of range or was in the clinch, and in both these states he had difficulties. Calzaghe liked it mid range, Hagler is one of the greatest fighters when it comes to controlling range with come forward types. Watch Alan Minter fight, Alan Minter was taller and had a better reach than Calzaghe, but Hagler put it on him. Minter was also a southpaw.

You think Calzaghe vs Hagler would be like SRL vs Hagler, I think that is bull**** to be honest.

I think this would be like the Hagler vs Alan Minter fight, Hagler had the better reach would outbox Calzaghe, then brawl him to a late KO. Calzaghe vs Lacy would never look like Calzaghe vs Hagler, look at the points mentioned above.

I couldn't tell you off the top of my head who was a natural mw or not. Tony Sibson,, Minter, Hamsho, Vito Antifuermo were I believe. Hearns had been campaigning as a mw for a few years by the time he fought Hagler.

i don't know what people are smoking, but comparing hagler to calzaghe is wishful thinking.

why don't you just make a 'what if' list of fighters joe should have fought in his time rather than comparing him to a fighter who earned his notoriety.

i will never - ever - understand people who come to this board and suck fighter's **** out of desperate patriotism like this.

    getting a ****ing life!
