Close fight. Both are well rounded fighters. Both have good speed, skills, chins, and an amazing will to win. Hagler has the edge in power, but Calzaghe is the bigger man. At 168 pounds I'd pick Joe via a close points decision.

He was a smallish middleweight to begin with, and back when he fought, you had to weigh in on the same day as the fight, so you couldn't drain as much water. Guys would try to hit the scales about 3 - 5 pounds off their fighting weight. These days, guys hit the scales 8 - 12 pounds below their fighting weight. I'm very confident that Hagler would have spent most of his career at 154 if he had previous day weigh-ins, and there's even a possibility he could have fought at welterweight. He was basically the same size and build as Travis Simms.

You make some interesting points. To me though, the size difference isn't as big of a factor as it seems to be to some. Hagler was the better fighter, he would also actually have a power and reach advantage. It's enough for me to believe that the size discrepancy wouldn't be much of a factor.

So much wrong with this post.First off,Hagler made his rep on a whole bunch of tough, tough Philly middleweights long before he even won the title.Second,JC was dropped by light hitting Bhop years after Bhop lost twice to JERMAINE TAYLOR at middleweight.Hagler had a superior right hand to Bhop to which JC was susceptible.JC was a great fighter, but how is it that he had so many problems with 43 year old Bhop with the 2 Taylor losses on his resume?Fact is,all those "big world class SMWs that a lot of people don't know" didn't give JC a tougher fight than Bhop did, who had lost twice to Jermaine.Seriously,Hagler by UD,prime for prime for those who are "ignorant".

Calzaghe gave BHop fits. And even the BHop Calzaghe fought would have given Hagler a hard time. And they both outweighed and outmuscled Hagler by a lot. Just saying this as well. Hopkins and Calzaghe would've given any MW problems just because of their size alone, not to include all their skills. And no one Hagler ever fought was a prime Hagler. No one he ever fought were Calzaghe and Hopkins either. But I'm sure those two would've given Hagler much more than any one in here is giving them credit for.

To other dude: don't give me that crap about Taylor beating Hopkins going against him. Hopkins never pretended lowblows and complained to the referee in that fight and a lot of people also said Hopkins won against Taylor like he did with Calzaghe. Hopkins just couldn't hang with JC.

Even then, so what? Taylor and Hopkins are both much larger men than Hagler just because of the weigh-in differential. Hopkins also blew up to 175 in his very next match because of weight issues and punked Tarver. Then after the Calzaghe fight, he punked Pavlik.

Size will ONLY and ONLY not count if the bigger man doesn't have skills or speed.

Calzaghe does HAVE skill AND speed in addition to his size which would be around 18-20 lbs over Hagler. Just the activity alone causes his opponents to shell up.

Calzaghe UD. Lots of delusional Ring Magazine-reading braindead puppets posting in this thread. Surely a ban is in order for such idiocy. :ban:ban1:dead:dead

I hear what your saying, but again, Calzaghe gave 43 year old Hopkins fits. And your making it sound as if a 160 pound Hagler would fight a lhw Calzaghe. You don't think Hagler at 168 or at a 164 catchweight would have been as strong as Calzaghe? And even if he wasn't, do you think would he get pushed around?

Calzaghe only had 1 1/2 inches on him heightwise, and gave up 2 inches of reach.

Haglar would pulverise him.I don`t even think Calzaghe would`ve beaten a prime Benn or Eubank.

    Hagler , not close.

While joes punches are quick , they are wide.

Hagler would have been right down the middle a slightly longer reach, better defence with real speed . I can actually see him creating a hearns type fight , really going after Joe , stunning him and stopping him early.

Possibly the greatest Middle of all time would win inside 6.

So many noticed Calzaghes punches are wide, and that they could go down the middle and still NOBODY could beat him. A small MW like Hagler would be able to either. Sorry

When does the fight happen. If Hagler is still a top-level fighter or would Calzaghe wait til he's been knocked out several times and clearly past it?

Why when did Calzaghe do that?
Hopkins and Jones didnt want to fight Calzaghe many years earlier, and when Calzaghe beat Hopkins it was when Hopkins was Ring LHW champ and P4P#3, sandwiched between Hopkins best wins of Tarver, Wright and Pavlik.
Kessler and Lacy werent past it either, neither was Mitchell, Veit, Mkertchyan etc. Eubank at 31 with only 2 losses to one fighter, the 2nd by SD wasnt shot either, and then went on to have 2 very close fights with a CW world champ.
So who are you reffering to?
