It's hard to say. Benns style may well be suited for Calzaghe - who knows. If its the high output slappy version of Joe, I think Calzaghe may well take it on points - the straighter punching version may well have his work cut out. Seeing as Benn faced, and beat better fighters then Calzaghe (proved himself more in someways) I'll give him the accolade. *Just to state before anyone else spins it -Benn stated in a round robin of Calzaghe, Benn, Eubank, and Collins Joe may well come out on top. This does not mean that Benn, Eubank, Collins all stated Calzaghe will beat them. It doesn't even mean Benn said Calzaghe will beat him.*
Benn DID actually say that Calzaghe would probably have beaten him & he holds him in very high regard. If Benn thinks JC would win & JC thinks JC would win & I think JC would win then its got to be a Calzaghe win, probably by ref stoppage in rd 11 but possible clear UD. Benn was a very good fighter but Calzaghe was/is a great fighter.
Can you provide the link please. I've ask this before from people repeating that, over and over (saying the same with Eubank, and Collins as well) - and they couldn't. I'm starting to think that is is a bit of a forum myth. I've only ever seen Benn stating Joe would probably come out on top if they all fought. He holds Calzahge in high regaurd, no doubt about that. Benn is a respectful chap. He also believes in the second comeing.
Has Calzaghe ever beat anybody as good as a Prime Nigel Benn, or anybody as good as some of those Benn beat? Nope Benn is far more tested.
This really annoyed me from Calzaghe yesterday, and I though it very rude. " I'd have beat them all." Speaking about Benn, Collins, and Eubank. The fact is that in 15 odd years he has never beat anyone as good as the prime versions of 2 or 3 of them. Beating a prime Benn or Eubank would be his greatest ever win. I think it very disrespectful that he so easily brushes them aside. Especially when the others speak highly of him. Reminded me of a disrespectful quote from Calzaghe on Lewis, from 2003, I ran across the other day. "Obviously Lewis is bigger than me," "But he's not better than me. I honestly believe I'm the best boxer in Britain."
Iran Barkley? yeah Joe's beat better fighters than that. And get this dude, he beat Eubank, and as you'll remember Joe beat him. Theres your answer. As for the hypothetical fight i'd say Joe UD or 11th/12th round stoppage due in the most part to the fact that this fight would be fought at a pace higher than that of Benn's encounter with the G man. My point being i think Benn would tire badly and be very susceptable to fatigue and so may catch a reasonably hard shot not have the power to throw back and then be put down by a hailstorm of Calzaghe punches and simply not have the energy to get back up. I think this would be one of the fights of all time personally; a total war.
Absolutely. Benn by TKO. Of course Calslappy would beat the post-McClellan version of Benn, but this is a prime v prime question.
Yes, Iran Barkley, in the States, 3 weight champ - defeater of Hitman hearns. That's not the best win on there either. Benn has the better resume - or at least the better wins - seriously.
I think he's just being honest. He's a better boxer than any of them. I also think he has more heart than all of them. And dude i'll be honest, i remeber Benn saying, 'yeah Calzaghe would have beaten me' It was an interview he done with the mirror or sun im not sure but one of the tabloids. It would be hard work but if someone went to a couple of the newspaper sites and used thier search engines to look through related articales then they would find it. Like i said alot of work though.
Joe's probably sick and tired of people saying "Eubank was spent when Joe beat him...Eubank, Benn and Collins would have beat Joe in their prime... Jeff Lacy was over-rated, Kessler bottled it....Hopkins would have won in his prime...RJJ is shot, RJJ would have destroyed Calzaghe in his prime...etc" I guarantee you if you asked the same question to any of the said fighters you'd get a similar answer!
Yeah but dude he was far from shot when he fought Joe. Joe beat him on heart and a wildwest style pace. Exactly how Collins beat him. But Joe beat him by the widest margin he had ever been beat by. Fact. To say he was shot is nonesense. After the Calzaghe fight he went and fought twice for........wait for it........................the world cruiserweight title. He fought Carl Thompson twice lossing by only one point on the judges card. They were both exellant world class fights and so so very close. Over the two fights Eubank dropped Thompson, yes thats right he dropped cruiserweight' three times. If thats how a shot fighter fights three weights above his actual fighting weight then you'll have to redefine what the word shot means.
