I believe Joe used his southpaw stance to win this bout and Jones couldn`t adjust, proving a great southpaw would also give Roy a ton of problems, was it really just age as to why Roy lost so badly in this bout? This content is protected
In his prime Roy fought dozens of southpaws and demolished them ...none were as good as Calzaghe ...but they didn’t trouble him because he’s not a jabber
Yes, Jones was outboxing him in the first 2 rounds until he gassed. There were countering opportunities there that Prime Roy would have pulled the trigger on and less head movement. Jones barely threw any leather and was much more flatfooted after the first 2 rounds. Note how Jones mouth is often open. He's tired despite not doing a whole lot. He was even breathing hard after knocking Calzaghe down in the first round. Not to say Calzaghe isn't a very underrated boxer around these parts.
I think that even prime vs prime joe would be a hard bone for roy stylistically because could match him in speed
Jones is clearly faster until he tires. The thing is maybe Calzaghe's workrate would always have been an issue for Jones. Although whether Joe maintains that output while being countered is another question. 2 of the best ever
Roy didn`t look faster in the first two rounds Joe just left himself open in the southpaw stance to the straight right, he adjusted in rd 3 by judging the range better and dominated the rest of the fight.
No knowledgeable fan of the sport would have taken the time to produce a film study of this fight. How many times have you mentioned this fight now Mark? You once told me that you were familiar with Roy's career. Roy was no longer a top level fighter at this stage, whereas Joe was, despite him being 36. Roy had no real belief in himself at this stage, and he only took the fight because Joe gave him a 50/50 deal of the entire promotion. Do you really truly believe that this fight would have played out the same, prime for prime?
On paper, Joe would always have been difficult. But the reality is, Joe never had the belief in himself to challenge Roy earlier. It wasn't bad luck that Joe defended a lightly regarded WBO belt for 10 years.
He would never have had the confidence to have unloaded high volume on a prime version of Roy. I say that with confidence after watchimg his entire career.
Roy was shot to pieces in that fight. Frail, fragile and all the old magic was gone. He wasn't even world level at this point.
Mark knows that prior to the fight Joe labelled Roy as being shot. Only an idiot would do a film study.
It would be interesting to see them both in their primes fighting at super middleweight. I’d favor Jones but Calzaghe would be a worthy foe
Next up a film study of why Jones lost to Danny Green quickly followed by the Jones vs Enzo Maccarinelli match up.
