Kovalevs a KO waiting to happen! When he beats someone with a pulse, maybe then we can start comparing him to ATGs like Calzaghe...maybe
I've been saying this for ages but Kovalev is not just a murderous puncher, he's also a master boxer, people need to start realising this, Hopkins certainly has. It was like before the Cleverly fight when the usual clueless mouth breathers were predicting Cleverly to outbox Kovalev and win a decision but after a couple of rounds it was clear that even if Kovalev had the power of Malignaggi and he could just box and win every round without breaking a sweat. Not only does Kovalev have the power to KO Clazaghe he also has the skills to outbox him if it some how went the distance.
He was getting outboxed by Darnell Boone, but he has the skills to outbox Calzaghe? Kovalev isn't a master boxer by any means, his power has just discouraged his glass jawed opponents from throwing punches. Its a myth that he outboxed Hopkins. The old man tasted his power in the first round and went into survival mode, simple as that. Calzaghe would literally school him.
He obliterated Boone in two rounds. Why would you bring up his 10th fight and ignore the fact he is on a different level now under JDJ. Hoipkins got shut out. How is it a myth when its clear as day.
Oh wow he shutout a 50 yr old man whose last relevant fight was a loss to Chad Dawson. If Hopkins had the same physical attributes as Kovalev he would school him every minute of every round. Hopkins is a master boxer, Kovalev is just a big strong guy with a lot of power. His defence is porous, a KO waiting to happen. Time will prove me right
It was sad to see Kovalev beating up a geriatric but not even having the minerals to try and go for the stoppage Wacthing him getting sparked cold with headgear on its really not hard to envision Adonis pulverising that chin with a straight left
Proven how? Hopkins was on wobbly legs against Mercado. Never in Calzaghes career was he on wobbly legs having to hold to survive, never having to go looking for timeout or not being able to continue midway through a fight. In fact Calzaghe was hardly ever on the back foot. We dont know how good Kovalevs chin is yet and he seems a very good fighter, but not Calzaghes level in my opinion. I would favour prime Calzaghe to stop Kovalev, but older Calzaghe to win a clear decision Noting the post above is interesting because as an amateur Calzaghe was never stopped and never took a standing count
He schooled and carried Hopkins, one of the greatest fighters ever, over 12 Rounds a few months back. Try again.
If old Jones and Hopkins can knock Calzaghe down, I don't see why Kovalev can't. However at this point, Kovalev has only fought 1 rather good opponent in 50 yr Hopkins.
The same fighter Calzaghe schooled and had looking for time out years previous, sandwiched between Hopkins best wins of Tarver, Wright and Pavlik. Calzaghe laid the LHW blueprint on how to beat Hopkins
Hopkins said in the post fight conference that Kovalev fought a smart fight. Hopkins didn't school him every minute of every round. He got schooled for every minute of every round. Both guys are in the light heavyweight division. I don't know if you can use the excuse Kovalev is just a big strong guy with a lot of power. Power is an asset in any weight. You can't discredit a boxer for being ''just a big strong guy with a lot of power''
