If it was at 168, you would have to say Calzaghe, it was his prime weight where he was able to turbo slap his way to a decision all day long. What people on here need to remember is that although Calzaghe did not hit hard, getting hit as many times as he would land "buzzes" you. Hence, that is why a lot of fighters game plans went to pot against him, as personally I don't think he was that much of a great ring-general as some people say, but someone that would land so much on you, you just become confused.

Also, I think Calzaghe knew this and that is why he knew he had to retire when he did, because once his speed went, he was pretty much done. For me Calzaghe is one of the biggest wasted talents of the past 20 years, because although he did enjoy a very good career, it could and perhaps should have been a great one.

However, this is not saying that he was a better boxer than Hearns, just that he was better at 168.

I'm sorry but this is a stupid thread. Its one thing to be a ******* or ***** but Joe fans are by far the worst. Hearns is a real ATG that will be remembered far longer than JC. The mans best win is Kessler who has always been overrated and somehow has an eye injury. Get out of here with that coke sniffing clown.

If Eubank was weight drained he shouldnt have taken the fight, but alot of fighters have trouble making weight. It was a great Calzaghe win, but in that case, then the same applies to Hopkins win over Tarver, Dawsons over Adamek and Jones win over Toney.

Sobot was a gimme, but he had fought Cherifi to a SD who had fought Reid to a SD and beat K Holmes to become a MW champ, so Joe getting rid of him in 3 rounds was a performance you should have expected from a great

Thornberry mandatory, had fought in world class before and challenged for world titles again. Not calling him a great by any means but he did fight in world class

Starie holds a win over former IBF champ C Woods and went on to challenge again. A solid SMW & a good win over a SMW who has done more than a fighter like A Green. Handy win

Veit an undefeated SMW, who has done more than A Dirrell just not recognised. Veit has only lost to world champs or fighters who have gone on to become world champs and holds a win over current WBO LHW champ Braehmer. Veit also holds wins over Perdermo, Lock and Brewer yet Calzaghe beat him inside the distance twice and once away in Germany. Nothing wrong with that win

Mcintyre was a fight to get American interest on a Tyson undercard and Joe got rid of him as expected inside the distance, even though Will hadnt been stopped before

    Jiminez a mandatory

Pudwill a late sub, because T Tate pulled out

    Salem a mandatory

Ashira a late sub but I forget who for

Manfredo was a fight to get American interest for a Hopkins fight, but Manfredo was a Ring top 10 SMW at the time of the fight. So nothing wrong with that.

So once again what long standing champ hasnt had some easier defences? You could say the same about Hopkins, Ottke or Michalczewski but they all have some good wins

    Calzaghe beat some good SMWs
    Eubank
    Reid
    Woodhall
    Mitchell
    Brewer
    Starie
    Veit
    Bika
    Lacy
    Kessler
    Mkertchyan

    and some lesser fighters in

    Sheika
    Manfredo
    Ferreyra

So in 22 SMW title fights, I see 14 of them as either good or very good wins

At 168? FFS this isn't even competitive. Calzaghe by late stoppage, this isn't Hearns weight.

They are very close in P4P terms but H2H it's a no contest no matter what some dumb ****s on this forum will say.

Even 14lbs above his best fighting weight and several years past his absolute peak (as Tommy was by the time he reached smw), Thomas Hearns has too much in his arsenal to lose to a fighter who does not have the power to knock him out. Hearns outboxes Calzaghe to a decision. The gap in ability and experience is just too big here.

Always like to read posts by others who were also there to put things in perspective .... reading Connor and his friends posting their absurd idol worship for their father everyday on ESB is sad and delusional.

Calzaghe is a smart fighter. He has a durable chin. He has great reaction speed. His stamina was beyond normal. He has fast handspeed and footspeed for 168 and 175. He can also play dirty.

Understand that Calzaghe was BIG for a 168 pounder.

Hearns is the better ATG P4P, but in all seriousness, Calzaghe would slap him to shreds in a 168 match. Take off your rose tinted glasses.

    :rofl:rofl:rofl

He was down for all of three seconds. Got up. Went toe to toe with Mitchell for a mere ten seconds before putting Mitchell on ***** street (quite a slap !).

And less than a minute later, it was all over.

Hearns was an ATG welterweight and junior middleweightt. He was a very good middleweight. But at 168, I think Calzaghe has a clear edge,

Calzaghe by decision or possibly a late stoppage. Hearns chin was shakey above 160.

    Calzaghe's wasn't.
