Another stupid comparison. Why not match up Calzaghe with Floyd Mayweather or Lennox Lewis, or Mike Tyson.
Yes, until he was 23. So are we going to pit a 23 y/o Calzaghe against him who's toughest opposition to that point 1995 was Stephen Wilson with 12 fights and 11-1-0 ?
Its a hypothetical scenerio friend both men campaigned at 175lbs how would the fight fair head to head when both campaigned at that weight...what's so hard to understand?
No...I think everyone is talking about when Joe was actually at 175...a little bit past his best..vs an up and coming MM.
Calzaghe at 175 was an experienced fighter with an untypically good endurance, but brittle hands and reduced speed. He beat Hopkins by slightly outspeeding him and using volume to make him look the lesser one. He was not even nearly his best when he was a stunningly fast fighter on his legs who would go in, land two and go out before his opponent realized he was there.
Ok I still don't see how this answers the original question on the thread...but if where going to go there...joe was probably the best 168lbs of his generation hall of fame worthy stats maybe an atg depending on how large a list we are speaking of...joe loses to ezzard, archie, spinx, muhammad, at light heavy he possibly but not likey gets by torres and tiger.
The question is, would strength and punching power work well against Joe? He was never really hurt, flash knockdowns were he bounced back at the count of two and went right back to throwing punches don't count for being hurt. We don't know how good his chin would have been against someone like Moorer.
The answer meant that a volume fighter with brittle hands probably wouldn't have "destroyed" a fighter at 175 who later went into heavyweight without too much trouble.
Joe Calzaghe would have stopped 80% of the fighters Moorer stopped at 175. Moorer took eight rounds to stop this guy: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=4086&cat=boxer The guy has little to worry Joe Calzaghe, who would easily outboxe him. Moorer's stamina at the weight likely isn't great. Calzaghe stops him late on via accumulation.
Calzaghe had good hand back then and had pretty heavy hands, Moorer isn't known for a good chin. KO for Calzaghe
