in chris byrds last fight as an amatuer he fought one joe calzaghe in a amatuer tournament in italy where they met in the final and chris byrd was stopped for the first and only time of his long amatuer career, by calzaghe.

good post:good calzaghe is personally my pound for pound number 1. biased or not. hes always stepped up to the plate and he will do against hopkins again. and hopkins did duck joe in his earlier days. and there was a reason for that. hes only fighting him now because hes expected to lose. which he will.

A voice of clarity is needed ladies and gentlemen. And a little insight into the subject, as a few myths and ego fueled wankery is occuring.

Firstly, It took me a while to walm to to Calzaghe. Id followed The middleweight division when I first got into boxing as It had the best, in my opinion group of fighters going.

Benn, Eubank, Jones, Hopkins, Toney, Watson, McCallum, Jackson, McClenan, Collins, Hill etc....

So when Calzaghe fought Eubank I didnt really give him a chance.Quite frankly I didnt rate Calzaghe, and thought even a Gunshy and far less aggresive version of Eubank would school this Welsh ***** back to the valleys.

But I hadnt expected Calzaghe to fight with the class and maturity he did. He showed a hell of a lot of class and bottle. So thus the Calzaghe era started. Not really bothering about him, I slowly noticed his quality yet doubted him. Silly me.

His carear has been one of quality and distinction. He is a fighter who has acheived a sucession of victories, and shown his definate class and talent.

Is it his fault that Toney Jones and Hopkins werent in his weight range, what is he supposed to do? If he was injured against Glen Johnson, well he is injured? Calzaghe was avoided by the former 3 fighters mentioned? Because they were terrified? No. Because they couldnt sort the money? No, ask Bernard that. He was avoided because the upside didnt meet the downside. Now that the tables have turned, has anyone noticed that every one and his dog want a piece of Joe now?

To claim that he lack the desire isnt right, To claim Frank Warren is a toadie who is scarred his fighters may see life beyond him? Very true, ask Hatton what his view is of Frank's fight making talents.

What many Americans of the uninformed disposition dont understand is that just because he has arrived late to the scene doesnt mean he isnt quality. Just because he isnt Ghetto, doesnt mean he is ****. Just because Max Kellerman doesnt want to cover him in oil and erotically rub his balls, doesnt mean he is ****.

If a American rugby or soccer player of top quality came onto the scene, Im pretty sure Europeans wouldnt start dissing him saying " Oh, he aint playing in Europe, he must be ****". Its this worrying xenophobia that taints Joe, Not his talents.
